MVRHS tennis teams off to 4-0 starts

The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys and girls tennis teams each posted a pair of wins this week, with both teams improving to 4-0 on the season.

The boys played on the road, defeating the Sandwich High School Blue Knights, 5-0, on Tuesday, and the Coyle and Cassidy Warriors by the same count last Friday in Lakeville. The Vineyarders took all 10 matches in straight sets.

In Sandwich, Max Potter defeated Oliver Prantis at first singles 6-1, 6-3, Chris Ferry prevailed 6-4, 6-2, over Evan Abramson at second singles, and Eric Reubens downed Jake Bates 6-0, 6-1, in the third singles match.

First doubles Spencer Pogue and Owen Favreau topped Jack Greenhalgh and Maxcy Denmark 6-0, 6-3, while David Krauthamer and Garrett Zeilinger defeated Sam Houda and Charles Gurner 6-0, 6-1, at second doubles.

Friday vs. Coyle and Cassidy, the Vineyard boys took to the court with the same lineup and were especially impressive, losing only four games in four matches. Max Potter defeated Ethan Costa 6-1, 6-1, and Chris Ferry won 6-1, 6-0, against Will Burgess. The Warriors defaulted the third singles match.

Spencer Pogue and Owen Favreau scored a 6-0, 6-0, double bagel over Justin Ferbert and Aiden Deharty, with Garrett Zeilinger and David Krauthamer completing the Vineyard sweep by defeating Nick Curtis and Matt Lundt 6-0, 6-1.

The boys host Dennis-Yarmouth on May 3 at 3 pm.

The Vineyard girls rolled to back-to-back wins Monday and Tuesday on the Ned Fennessy Courts in Oak Bluffs.

Tuesday, against Sandwich in bright sunshine, the Vineyarders won, 5-0, but the visiting Blue Knights got off some extended rallies.

All three singles matches ended 6-0, 6-0. Kelly Klaren defeated Jade Fergusen, Victoria Scott topped Sabrina Gonzales, and Hannah Rabasca returned to the lineup with a victory over Caroline Breen. Kat Roberts and Lizzie Williamson kept up the string of double bagels by defeating Sophie Esdale and Carol Lewis at first doubles. The best match of the day came in second doubles, with Molly Pogue and Alex Rego earning a 6-1, 6-4, win against Anna Dykeman and Alex Birch.

Monday afternoon, the Vineyarders shut out Coyle and Cassidy, 5-0, in a match as brisk as the weather. Kelly Klaren (first singles), Victoria Scott (second singles), Kat Roberts and Lizzie Williamson (first doubles), and Alex Rego and Chesca Potter (second doubles) all won 6-0, 6-0. Molly Pogue closed out the contest with a 6-2, 6-0, win at third singles.

The girls play at Bishop Stang in North Dartmouth on Friday, and host Barnstable on Monday at 3 pm.
