Edgartown: Birding weekend

0

Happy May. It is May, right? It certainly seemed like it on Saturday. Not so much on Sunday. Spring is trying to get its footing, it seems, but can’t hold on for more than a day or so. I do glory in those beautiful sunny days, though, even if they do seem few and far between. But man, I do get tired of trying to figure out how to dress every day.

All are invited to the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group’s annual fundraising gala, An Evening Under the Stars, at Farm Neck on Thursday, May 17, 5:30 pm until 8:30 pm. The evening features a buffet dinner, silent auction, music by Mike Benjamin, and a cash bar. All proceeds from the event will support the group’s mission of helping island cancer patients and their families with medical expenses and other treatment-related expenses. For further information and to purchase tickets, please call AnnMarie Donahue at 508-627-7958.

Mass Audubon, the state’s largest nature conservation nonprofit, will hold its 35th annual Bird-a-Thon fundraiser on Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12. During this event, birding teams across the state will compete to see or hear the most bird species in 24 hours. Locally, birders and fundraisers will compete to raise money for Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary Bird-a-Thon fundraising concert, “Speak Up for Nature,” will follow the Bird-a-Thon at the Ritz on May 11. The evening offers up music, prizes, and education benefiting Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary. Celebrate all of the species you found with face painting from 6 to 8pm, a raffle, live music starting at 7 pm, and more! Musical guests include Electric Pie, the Brothers McMahon, Auntie Em and the Bedspins, the Black Eyed Susan’s, Rose Guerin, and Willy Mason. The suggested donation at the door is $5. For more information, visit bit.ly/birdathoninfo, where you may also make a donation.

Happy birthday wishes this week go out to Olivia Lingren on May 9, Cookie Perry on May 10, and Nedine Cunningham on May 12.

Say what you will about Islanders Talk on Facebook, it certainly has some downsides, but it is a great place to start a grassroots movement. And talk about a great guy to lead the way. J.B. Blau, owner of Sharky’s, M.V. Chowder Co., and Loft, and all-around Good Samaritan and amazing community member, has put the call out on IT to invite the Steamship Authority governors, town leaders, and state government officials Dylan Fernandez and Julian Cyr to an open forum ASAP, to ask them to investigate the SSA goings-on over the past three months. Enough is enough. When more details about the forum are firmed up, I’ll be sure to share the news here. And look for it on IT on Facebook as well.

This weekend is the seventh annual Pink and Green Weekend in Edgartown. Many businesses in town are having special events or sales to celebrate. There is also a 5K race, and various brunches in honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday morning. For more information on things to do, visit edgartownboardoftrade.com.

Next week, Edgartown students will be taking the MCAS exams again. This time around, we’ll be doing math in grades 3 through 8, and science in grades 5 and 8. Encourage your kids to get lots of rest and eat a healthy breakfast on testing days. And remind them not to worry! While it’s important for them to try their best, it’s only part of who they are on any given day.

It’s a quiet news week this week, I guess. People gearing up for a big weekend ahead. Don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday. As always, it’s bittersweet for me without my mum. I enjoy it as a mom, but for most of my life I enjoyed it as a daughter. For a day that is meant for lovely sentiments and recognition of moms, it can be a very hard day for many, for a whole host of reasons. So here’s to the moms: the would-be moms, the mistake-making moms, the world’s best moms, the stepmoms, the long-distance moms, the adopted moms, the pet moms, the grandmoms, and any other moms out there. I will celebrate Mimi, my 91-year-old mother-in-law, and I’ll have some special time with my kids. And maybe I’ll go down to State Beach, on the Oak Bluffs side, and spend some time with Buzzy.

Have a great week.
