This is going to be the best week of summer: School started on Tuesday, and Chilmark Chocolates reopens today, plus the Powwow is happening. All the service workers I have talked to over the past couple of weeks are quite tired and ready for a break. Hopefully this September will be beautiful and warm, so we can all get some more beach days in (remember that you still need a pass at Philbin through September). The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby starts on Sept. 9 — get ready.
The Aquinnah Wampanoag Powwow is this weekend at the circle, on Saturday and Sunday. Grand Entrance is at noon on Saturday. The MC for the event this year is Justin “Bigishkibin” Beatty. The head dancers are Attaquin Weeden-Machado for the men and Victoria Miranda for the women. There will be dances and performances throughout the weekend, Native vendors, and of course amazing food.
The Aquinnah Wampanoag Indian Museum is still open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. The exhibit, “Our Story: 400 Years of Wampanoag History,” will close this weekend. So get up to the Cliffs and check it out. The museum is located at the Vanderhoop Homestead at the Cliffs.
The Aquinnah Public Library will host “Henna with Bridgette” on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 5 pm. Story Time will be on Thursday at 3:30 pm and Saturday at 10:30 am. Kids’ Craft is on Saturday from 11 am to 3 pm. The Afterschool Club will be starting up again on Tuesdays at 4 pm.
The Menemsha Bike Ferry is no longer running on weekdays. It is running on Saturday and Sundays from 9 am to 5 pm until further notice. One of the captains of the bike ferry, Buck Reidy, suffered a stroke in August, but he is doing quite well and expected to fully recover. Angie Waldron is still recovering from her two strokes that she experienced at the beginning of the summer. She is up and about; I saw her at the fair (she took the bus down), and when I asked if she needed dinner brought to her or anything, in true Angie fashion, she said she was fine.
The Outermost Inn is serving dinner Tuesday through Sunday until Columbus Day. Please call to make a reservation at 508-645-3511. The Aquinnah Shop is serving dinner on the weekends, and breakfast and lunch every day but Tuesday, when they are closed. The Chilmark Tavern is serving dinner Thursday through Monday. Cliffhangers is planning on staying open until Columbus Day weekend.
Happy birthday to Paul Manning, who celebrates this Friday. According to my son, Clyde Smith’s birthday party on Philbin this past Sunday was “the best party ever.” Tons of kids (and parents) gathered to wish Clyde a happy 14th birthday and end the summer with an evening beach party.
