The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, will hold five public meetings, including one on Martha’s Vineyard, in December to discuss the future of the Cape Cod Canal bridges in Bourne.
According to a press release, the meetings are the result of a study of the Bourne and Sagamore bridges to determine whether major rehabilitation or replacement of either or both bridges will provide the most reliable, fiscally responsible solution for the future.
The Army Corps wants to hear from residents of Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and the Cape, along with any other stakeholders who want to voice their opinions on the bridges. The existing bridges were constructed 83 years ago, and “require increasingly more frequent maintenance, which is costly and causes significant impact to traffic crossing the Cape Cod Canal,” according to the release.
During the meetings, the Corps will provide the public with an overview of of the study, and the public will have the chance to ask questions and provide comments.
Registration will start at 6 pm. There will be an open house from 6 to 6:30 pm, with information posters and Corps staff on hand to answer questions about the project. A project overview presentation will begin at 6:30 pm, followed by the opportunity for public comment.
The Corps public information meetings are scheduled for the following dates and locations:
- Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Plymouth South High School, Performing Arts Center, 490 Long Pond Road, Plymouth.
- Thursday, Dec. 6, in the Nantucket High School auditorium, 10 Surfside Road, Nantucket.
- Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the Martha’s Vineyard High School Performing Arts Center, 100 Edgartown–Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs.
- Wednesday, Dec. 12, in the Barnstable High School Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main St., Hyannis.
