Edgartown: Wreath week

0

The island is quite lively this weekend, as many people arrive for Thanksgiving. I heard that Woods Hole was a madhouse on Sunday, with lengthy standby lines, and I’ve seen a number of unfamiliar faces, as well as many college kids home for the break. This is rapidly becoming a weeklong vacation for many. I’m looking forward to Thursday, as Riley is due in that morning. I tend to cook a lot of stuff the day before so that Thanksgiving day isn’t so frantic.

Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Charlie Morano, who celebrated on Nov. 17, Maureen Hill and Myllenna DeOliveira on Nov. 19, Michelle O’Teri on Nov. 21, and Donna Enos and Heather Hunt on Nov. 22. And a happy anniversary to to Kelly and Mark Hess on Nov. 22 as well.

The Edgartown Federated Church will be holding Wreath Workshops on Monday, Nov. 26, Tuesday, Nov. 27, and Wednesday, Nov. 28, from 9 am to 4 pm at the Parish House at 45 South Summer St., Edgartown. Help make over 75 all-natural and hand-decorated wreaths, to be sold at the Festival of Wreaths on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 4 pm until 6 pm. If you wish, you may purchase the wreath you make at the workshop for $70 the day of the workshop. Experience is helpful, but not required, as there are many projects to work on, and many hands make light work! 508-627-4421.

The Festival of Wreaths benefits the preservation and maintenance of the 1832 Mayhew Parsonage. Stop by the Meetinghouse on Nov. 29 to see the wreaths for sale for $50 to $70, or more if you choose. There is no cost to go and look! Viewing the wreaths and smelling the fresh-cut evergreens will certainly put you in the Christmas spirit. Stop by the Parish House for beverages and hors d’oeuvres while you view the terrific raffle and auction items. For more information call 508-627-4421, email admin@federatedchurchmv.org, or check out their website at federatedchurchmv.org.

Felix Neck will be holding its 37th annual Fall Festival on Friday, Nov. 23, from 11 am until 3 pm. This celebration of fall is a Vineyard tradition held the day after Thanksgiving. With hayrides, face-painting, live music, food, crafts for kids, live animals, and trail walks, there is something for everyone, and fun to be had by the whole family. The rain date is Saturday, Nov. 24. The cost is $6 for members and $9 nonmembers. Children under 3 are free.

Martha’s Vineyard Children’s Chorus will be holding a Dine to Donate at Offshore Ale Co. on Nov. 29. You can email marthasvineyardchildrenschorus@gmail.com to get your ticket for the event, and support the organization by eating at Offshore on this date and presenting your ticket. The event will take place 11:30 am to 3:45 pm, and 5 to 8:30 pm. Feel free to email the chorus with any questions!

Congratulations to the high school football team for getting back in the game after having to cancel last year’s game. I know that the team is probably disappointed with their defeat to the Nantucket Whalers on Saturday, but it’s important to remember where you came from and where you are heading. The team made a valiant effort. There’s always next year.

That’s all for this week. I wish you a wonderful holiday full of family, friends, and good food. Please feel free to share stories of your gatherings or adventures for next week’s column. Have a great week.
