OAK BLUFFS
March 31, 2005

By Megan Alley - 508-693-0850 - meganislandmegan@verizon.net

It is nice to see familiar faces in the stores and post office as many residents have returned to their homes after escaping to the warm country during this long, snowy winter. The sun was very co-operative on Easter Sunday, warming things up a bit so many Easter egg hunts could go on as scheduled. Elizabeth Alley, recently returned home after a brief stay at the hospital, was all smiles as her yard was a scene of happy children searching everywhere for the eggs hidden about the area. This hunt has gone on for so many years that no one can recall when the first one was held.

Wesley and Sandy Mott had as their guests over the Easter weekend their son, Natt Mott and his family: his wife Christine, and their daughters Quinn and Julia. Also visiting were their daughter, Sarah Mott Alwardt, and her husband, Jason, along with their two children Morgan and Benjamin. Of course an Easter egg hunt was also on their list of must-do things.

Former Oak Bluffs Selectman Ken Rusczyk has returned from a two-and-a-half month journey to Southeast Asia that included Myanmar (Burma), Malaysia, and Thailand. Originally planned as an escape from winter to a climate of warm air and water, it rapidly became an education in Buddhism, conversations with tsunami survivors, and jungle treks to waterfalls and caves. In Kanchanaburi, Thailand he spent more than a week living on a river raft near the site of the bridge on the River Kwai made famous by the Oscar-winning movie. More than 116,000 POWs and local captives died in the construction of the Japanese railway from Burma in 1942-3. Ken also visited more than 50 Buddhist temples (Wats) while traveling in the countryside. While in noisy, polluted Bangkok he saw the solid gold, 5.5-ton Golden Buddha at the What Traimit and the Emerald Buddha near the Grand Palace. Jumping 12 time zones and spending nearly 20 hours in planes was exhausting and now that the adventure is a warm, wonderful memory, Ken will turn to the important things: golf, running, and starting tomato and veggie seeds.

If you would like to meet the Oak Bluffs candidates in the running for political office then be sure to attend the Candidates Night sponsored by the League of Women Voters. It will be held on Thursday, April 7 at the Oak Bluffs School.

The results of the Bullying survey recently undertaken by the Oak Bluffs School will be published over the next several weeks in the Carousel School newspaper. One of the conclusions drawn from the surveys indicates that students have difficulty distinguishing between “teasing” and “bullying.” More information and possible solutions will be offered also.

The Oak Bluffs School Kindergarten Concert will be held on Thursday, March 31 from 6:30 to 7 pm.

We send Birthday smiles to Hunter Ponte who celebrated number four on March 25 with his parents, Kenny and Erica Ponte and his sister Shelby, and to Garrett Broadly who turns four today, March 31, but is looking forward to a party with friends and family on Saturday. And send big smiles to Betty Rose and Robin Meader who party on April 1 and Sandy Ferreira on April 6.

Send your news my way and enjoy your week.
