Christin R. Bouchard

Christin R. Bouchard

Christin Renee Bouchard, 31, of Norwood died unexpectedly March 22 at Cape Cod Hospital. She was the beloved daughter of Donna Bouchard-Ciriello of Oak Bluffs and Paul T. Bouchard of Ashfield, and devoted mother of Brian Edward Letscher of Foxborough.

Christy was a lively, joyful, and beautiful young woman with a caring and giving heart. She spent most of her young life between Martha's Vineyard and western Massachusetts, settling in her later years on Cape Cod, and Norwood. She attended Tisbury School in Vineyard Haven during her junior high school years, graduated from Norwood High School and was a good friend to many. She was a loving mother, leaving behind her 11-year-old son, Brian. She spent many years caring for children as a nanny during her son's early years and had an exceptional kindness, charm, and grace with small children. Christy has a special place in the hearts of all who knew her and she will be lovingly remembered.

She is survived by her brother, Daniel R. Cuff of Oak Bluffs; her step-mother, Patience Lowe; her sisters Sara Lowe and Rachel Bouchard; and brothers Jeremiah Bouchard and Nelson Bouchard all of western Massachusetts. Also by her maternal grandmother Rose M. Ciriello of Lexington; and her paternal grandparents John R. and Phyllis (McKeever) Bouchard of Barnstable, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Her memorial service was held in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home in Mashpee on March 26. Donations may be made in her memory to Vineyard House, Inc., P.O. Box 4599, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

Richard A. Dice

Richard A. Dice

Richard Arling Dice, 78, who, for more than 34 years, maintained law offices in Cheshire, Conn. (and Danbury) where he was a prominent civil leader, died March 25 at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury, Conn. He was the husband of Constance Sidor Dice.

Mr. Dice was born July 3, 1926 in Mason City, Iowa, son of the Lila A. and Arling J. Dice. He was raised on farms in Iowa, attended Iowa rural schools, served aboard the Destroyer Escort “Knudson” and in the Philippine Theatre during WW II, and graduated from the University of Iowa. Mr. Dice was employed as an accountant-auditor for General Electric Company, graduated from Yale Law School, received a Certificate in Securities Law from the University of Colorado and opened his own law firm in Cheshire and Danbury. He was General Counsel, Vice President-Legal, a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Cott Beverage Corp., served three terms in the Connecticut Legislature, and retired as an arbitrator for the New York, American, NASD and other stock exchanges as well as the American Arbitration Association.

A demonstrated leader, Mr. Dice initially served as president of his local and county 4-H clubs, and was elected president of his freshman and senior high school classes. He won state recognition in athletic and music programs. After his WWII service he attended the University of Iowa and became president of the student council and the Board of Trustees of all Student Publications. He received honors in many college political, journalistic, fraternity, and musical activities.

He was chairman of the New Haven Jaycees and the Connecticut Youth of Eisenhower movement, numerous Cheshire political campaigns, Cheshire's Tax Limitation Committee, The Bridges (an operating resort in Warren, Vt.) and Cheshire's Economic Development Commission. He served as Chairman of the Legislature's Appropriations Committee and served on the Connecticut State Financial Advisory Committee and as co-chairman, with Senator Joseph Leiberman of the Bi-partisan Legislative Committee to Investigate Leasing Practice of the State of Connecticut.

Mr. Dice served on many boards and commissions, including as a Commissioner of Bradley International Airport, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cheshire Academy, and the Yale Law School Alumni Board. He also was a member of numerous civic and professional organizations in Cheshire, including the Cheshire Republican Town Committee, the Cheshire High School Building Committee, the Cheshire United Fund Steering Committee and others, and served for years as town meeting moderator.

He was an avid skier, loved tennis and bicycled extensively. He owned his own airplane, holding a commercial pilot's license with an instrument rating, and was a member of the Connecticut State Experimental Aircraft Association.

Mr. Dice's law practice grew from a sole practitioner in 1955 to a firm of 13 lawyers that served Cheshire and Danbury. He served as Town Counsel for Prospect and as Cheshire's Prosecuting Grand Juror. He was a member of the Bars of the States of Connecticut, New York, District of Columbia, U.S. District Court of Connecticut, U.S. Tax Court and the United States Supreme Court, and held memberships in the American, Connecticut and New Haven Bar Associations. He was a real estate broker.

Mr. Dice is survived by his beloved wife, Constance Sidor Dice, of Cheshire, Conn.; his brother the Rev. Lee Dice of Wooster, Ohio; five children and 14 grandchildren. His daughter Dee Ann Dice and her daughter Sienna live in Vineyard Haven.

A memorial service was held on March 30 at the Chapel at Elim Park Place in Cheshire. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to: St. Mary's Hospital, Xavier 3 Oncology Department, 56 Franklin Street, Waterbury, CT.

Dr. Mary Alice Newman

Dr. Mary Alice Newman

Dr. Mary Alice Newman of Vineyard Haven died suddenly March 22 in North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Ga. She had just turned 80. She was surrounded by her two daughters, Betsy and Mary, and sons-in-law Gary and Steven.

Mary Alice was born on March 10, 1925 in Crawfordsville, Ind., to Raymond and Dorothy (Greene) Ross. She was raised in West Lafayette, Ind. Mary Alice attended Wellesley College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She continued her education to the fullest extent, gaining a master's degree and Ph.D., from the University of Chicago in English literature and history. Thereafter she taught and was assistant dean of students. In 1954 she married James E. Newman, a fellow Ph.D., of history and dean of students. Jim died on Aug. 1, 2004. In 1962, they adopted their first child, Betsy, and within a few years moved to the Indiana Dunes. Mary Alice gave up her career to become a full-time housewife and mother. In 1970 they adopted their second child, Mary.

While living in Dune Acres, Mary Alice and Jim enjoyed being members of the Book Group, Bridge Club, Play-Reading Group and were on many social committees. They traveled frequently to Chicago for many cultural events. They also traveled extensively through the British Isles and Europe. In 2001 they made the permanent move to their beautiful summer home on Martha's Vineyard. After Jim's death last August, Mary Alice moved down to Georgia to be near her daughters and their families. She never got over Jim's sudden death and obviously is with him again. Mary Alice was also instrumental in starting the Montessori program in Northwest Indiana and volunteering at Emmanuel Lutheran School, which Mary attended. Education was very important to both Mary Alice and Jim and they were happiest just sitting and talking. Their common interests were extraordinary and made for a long and happy marriage.

Mary Alice was a beloved mother and wife whom many will miss greatly. Being able to care for her these last months brought great joy to her daughters and they were honored to have that privilege. Her death, coming on the heels of Jim's, is and will be very difficult for many who loved them both.

Mary Alice is survived by daughters Betsy (Gary) Tull of Roswell, Ga.; Mary (Steven) Costello of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Sarah Ross, Megan Elizabeth and Jacob Ryan Costello.

A memorial service will follow at a later date on Martha's Vineyard. Those wishing information can write Betsy Tull at 908 Legacy Oaks Circle, Roswell, GA 30076, or Mary Costello at 2150 Ashley Crossing Court, Lawrenceville, GA 30043.

Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Rd, Roswell, GA 30076, (770) 993-4811.
