SHORT SUBJECTS
March 31, 2005

Music and art go hand in hand

Charles and Nancy Blank will do a multi-media presentation at the Tisbury Senior Center on the connection between art and music on Monday, April 4 at 1:30 pm.

Art slides and CD music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be presented together to show similarities between music and art and how they parallel each other.

Do music and art reflect or herald the times? Decide for yourself. This is the last Music Appreciation Hour for the season. The lecture is free.

What is a best boy?

Island documentary filmmaker Jonathan Skurnik will be shooting a film the weekend of April 9-10 in Edgartown. “The film depicts the tense moments in a couple's early relationship after receiving some unexpected news” said Mr. Skurnik.

The director needs help with art direction, catering, and other production assistance, and is putting out the call to all interested Islanders. For more information, call Mr. Skurnik at 508-693-2109.

"
City Saints and the Starry-eyed Shuffle," set to vintage rock music, will be part of the She-figured Dance performance in Cambridge this weekend.

Island dancers in Cambridge

The Vineyard based company, She-figured Dance, presents a full-length performance, “Bits of Leverage,” at The Dance Complex's Julie Ince Thompson Theatre in Cambridge on Saturday, April 2 at 8 pm and Sunday, April 3 at 7 pm.

For more information, contact Jil Matrisciano at 508-560-8306 or shewhirls@comcast.net.

La Roque brings her music home

Islander Meghan La Roque appears at Offshore Ale with Todd Martin on Thursday, March 31. Ms. LaRoque will tour the east coast to promote her new release, “Drunk In A Kiss.”

In 2004 Ms. La Roque started her own record label, Rock You Records, and “Drunk In A Kiss” is the label’s first release.

Writer shares her secrets

Joyce Wagner returns to the Island to teach writing workshops at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs. On Saturday, April 2 Ms. Wagner teaches “Learning to Think Like a Writer.” The morning session, from 9:30 am to noon, is for children ages 10 to 12 while the afternoon class, from 1:30 to 4 pm, is for adults. Class size is limited and registration is suggested.

Look for information on all the Featherstone classes in the spring 2005 brochure or call 508-693-1850.

Deadline for artists’ directory

The Martha’s Vineyard Center for the Visual Arts (MVCVA) is ready to send their 2005 issue of Artists and Galleries on Martha’s Vineyard to the printer. Are you included?

The directory is distributed Island-wide to galleries, inns, bed and breakfasts, and many other locations. Call Chris Dreyer at 508-645-9671 for all the particulars. Don’t miss the Monday, April 4 critique at the MVCVA/Firehouse Gallery. Bring your work and get helpful feedback from fellow artists.

Jump over the moon and win big

Do you have an idea to help our community? Garelick Farms wants to know. If your idea bowls them over, you can win $25,000 to make your idea happen.

Submit an essay, song, video, poster or some other form of expression, and let Garelick Farms know how the grand prize would make your community a better place. The $25,000 prize will be awarded for the idea that has the most positive impact on the lives of those in our community.

This contest seems tailor-made for creative Islanders who are also conscientious citizens. Get the creative juices flowing. The deadline for the Over The Moon Dream Big Contest is May 30. Visit
www.overthemoonmilk.com for all the details.
