Breathing
again
I wish I could tell you to run to the Vineyard Playhouse to see Coming
Up For Air: An Autojazzography with Stan Strickland, but I can't.
The show ran for only two nights last weekend. The autobiographical
story of a near-drowning experience was a perfect combination of Mr.
Strickland's talents as a musician, singer, storyteller, and actor.
The clarity of Mr. Strickland's playing cut straight to the soul.
Every note was important to the story, and his story inspired the
music. The intimate theater space allowed the audience to hear Mr.
Strickland's breath travel through the sax, at times giving the music
the wonderful raspy quality of an old 72-rpm record. At other times
his sound was pure and clear like the beautiful Hawaiian sky in his
story. We could both see it and hear it simultaneously.
His breath, his music, and his story made for a unique theater experience.
Mr. Strickland generously shared the jazz experience with the audience
by teaching us a seemingly simple tune and asking us to hum it. He
then improvised on sax around our melody, creating a song that came
from his story, through his voice, to his audience, and back through
his sax in a fluid musical communion.
Two years in the making, the autojazzography is the result of a collaboration
between Jon Lipsky and Mr. Strickland. Mr. Lipsky, playhouse artistic
associate, wrote and directed the piece. The two will continue to
work on the show as they prepare for a second production in Boston
next weekend. Their hope is that these workshops will lead to a full
professional run of the play. So do I.
Irish folk tale for the family
The Vineyard Playhouse's troupe, The Fabulists, theater for children,
will perform Gallymanders, An Irish Tale on Saturday morning.
The play is adapted by Elizabeth Wojtusik and directed by MJ Bruder
Munafo. The Martha's Vineyard Library Association sponsors the show.
The play is perfect for the whole family. Look for improvisation and
audience participation.
The doctor is out and on stage
Dr. Gerry Yukevich is an emergency room physician at Martha's Vineyard
Hospital who has a flair for dramatics. This Friday and Saturday evenings,
Dr. Yukevich will perform three dramatic monologues in his recital
at the playhouse. The Boarding House, by James Joyce,
describes a poignant and comic imbroglio in turn-of-the-century Dublin.
As Prince Prospero from The Masque of the Red Death by
Edgar Allen Poe, he tells the tale of a catastrophic ball. The
Magic Step is a brief comic farce about the world of ballroom
dancing, written by Dr. Yukevich himself.
Incidental music for The Masque of the Red Death was composed
by Tony Schemmer. Playhouse artistic director MJ Bruder Munafo is
coaching Dr. Yukevich.
