Crocuses are peeking up everywhere, even through the little snow that
remains on the shady side of houses. How can such fragile flowers
of spring force their way up through soil so hard that my sharp trowel
can scarcely make a dent in it? Rhododendrons are struggling to overcome
the bent branches caused by the weight of ice. This might be the year
to cut big bunches when they bloom. We had a lovely big bush that
has been seriously damaged by the past few winters. Last year the
gardeners suggested we leave it to see whether it would recover. I
think they did not want to believe that the whole center has died.
It not only did not recover, this past winter did it even more harm.
Do you remember Betty Kauffman? She was a nurse in Elder Services
and many other Island health organizations. She is now living in Fort
Myers, Fla., where Barbara Donald visited her earlier this month.
Barbara says that Betty plans to move a little farther north, to the
area near Silver Springs, Fla., to be nearer to her daughter. Betty
sends her regards to all her friends here on the Island.
Marian Halperin spent many years as the director of the Martha's Vineyard
Historical Society. After she
Retired, she volunteered her time in the society library and as a
docent. For several years now she has been transcribing diaries in
the society collection. On Sunday afternoon at 3 pm she will read
excerpts from some of these 18th century diaries at the Vineyard Haven
Public Library. The library Friends will provide light refreshments
afterwards.
Want to meet Franklin? Franklin is a green turtle. He is the star
of popular stories created by Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark.
He is coming to the Library next Tuesday to meet little children at
both 10 and 11 am. He may even visit the Tisbury School. The children
are very fond of both his books and videos, all available at the library.
On Tuesday, April 12, the little ones will sing along with Susie Bowman.
Tonight at 5:30 pm the Library Evening Workshop begins a course called
Discovering a Sense of Place. This is a follow up to the Voluntary
Simplicity Course. For eight weeks the workshop participants will
try to develop a bio-regional perspective. Examine your personal values
and habits. Learn the connection between your lifestyle and that of
your neighbors and how these affect your Island.
If you notice an overabundance of plaids next Wednesday, there is
a reason. April 6 was proclaimed National Tartan Day by Congress in
1998. Many Islanders with Scottish ancestry will be proudly sporting
their tartans. A few to watch for are Marion and Bob MacKay, Pat and
Bob Wheeler, Toni Neil, and Kaye and Art Flathers. I suppose that
if all of us can wear green on March 17 and be a bit Irish then the
same should apply on Tartan Day. Be a bit Scottish on Wednesday and
wear a tartan.
Happy birthday to Tom Zinno. He celebrates on Saturday. Big bunches
of birthday balloon wishes go out to Janet Holladay. Her big day is
next Wednesday.
