Welcome home to
two West Tisbury friends, Rosalie Powell and Hallie Mentzel. Rosalie
has returned from Florida, Palm Harbor and Anna Maria Island to be
exact, and is ready to resume her rug-hooking group on Thursday. She
and her son, Jim, enjoyed an Easter weekend visit from Ted and Susan,
who came from Canton. Hallie is home after surgery at Beth Israel
Hospital. She reports feeling better every day and being happy to
be home. We who love her are all very grateful.
Fire Chief Manny Estrella has received a lot of good-natured ribbing
about the letter all West Tisbury residents found in our mailboxes
last week. The Chief, normally taciturn, was quite verbose in his
letter written in behalf of the West Tisbury Volunteer Firemen's Civic
Association. His excellent description of what firemen actually do
in terms of training and responding to fires and other emergency situations
somewhat obscured the message that donations were being sought, how
to make out the checks, and where to send them. The immediate needs
are for new Scott Air Packs, lighter weight and with a longer capacity,
and for a new brush truck to replace the one currently on loan from
the State Forest. Checks may be written to the West Tisbury Volunteer
Firemen's Civic Association and mailed to P.O. Box 211, West Tisbury,
MA 02575.
The association took time after their usual Sunday morning routine
of checking communications and equipment to host the second Annual
West Tisbury Fire Department Easter Egg Hunt for the department's
kids. A huge pink Easter Bunny greeted everyone behind Station 1.
Brightly colored plastic eggs, filled with toys and candy, were hidden
in the field and surrounding woods; every single one was found. Chocolate
bunnies and the most beautiful cupcakes (Easter baskets with licorice
handles, green icing grass, and jelly-bean eggs) awaited
the returning participants. Selectman Skipper Manter, child-like in
spirit, appeared with a sheetrock bucket instead of a modest basket,
pretending to compete with the children to everyone's amusement. It
was a nice opportunity for us to meet each other's families and to
enjoy each other's company.
Tori Gadowski and her daughters, Jennelle and Jaidah, were here from
Boston for the Easter festivities, staying with Tori's mom, Jennie.
Jennie has sold her house on Old County Road and will be retiring
as a Tri-Town EMT at the end of this month.
Easter afternoon found most of West Tisbury (seemingly, most of the
Island) lined up along the slope leading down Moshup Trail in Aquinnah
for the Soapbox Derby. It was a blast. Everybody was so excited; unfortunately,
this meant everybody was standing in the road, which slowed things
up quite a bit. The ultimate winner was Jonathan Spinney, but I think
the real winners were everyone who spent time designing and building
their entries, and all of us who enjoyed a grand afternoon.
Around the Island, the Easter costumes ranged from practical everyday
turtlenecks and sweaters to very fashionable concoctions worthy of
any Easter Parade. Most noteworthy was the Easter bonnet sported by
Coco Brown, made by herself, with flowery fabrics and a border around
the rim of pink and white silk blossoms. And it didn't blow off as
the breeze picked up in Aquinnah.
Happy Birthday on March 30 to Nancy Cole. Sadly, the following day
will be her last at the library. As a result of closing the Music
Street Annex, we are losing a staff position as well. That position
has been Nancy's. It has been a privilege knowing and working with
Nancy. Her competent and cheerful presence behind the desk will be
missed by all.
The West Tisbury Spring Musical Rock 'n' Roll High will
be held this weekend at the school. The performances Friday and Saturday
evenings begin at 7 pm. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for kids,
to benefit the arts department.
The sixth Annual Statewide Rabies Vaccine Clinic will be held at the
MSPCA in Edgartown, this Saturday, April 2, from 10 am to 2 pm. The
suggested donation is $10 per animal. Our Animal Control Officer Joan
Jenkinson will be on hand so that West Tisbury residents may purchase
their 2005 dog licenses if they haven't yet done so.
All pet-owners, please note: ticks are back. Tallulah, Jake, and Grace
have all had several.
Alicia Knight asked that parents of children aged 2 years 9 months
(by 8/31/05) to 5 years be reminded to attend the Friends of the Chilmark
Preschool Open House on Monday, April 4, from 4-6 pm at the Chilmark
School. Parents will have an opportunity to see the space, meet the
Director/Lead Teacher and Board members, and to learn about the program.
The League of Women Voters has cancelled the Candidates' Forum planned
for Wednesday, Apr 6. West Tisbury Selectmen will be available the
following evening, April 7, at 7 pm at the Howes House to answer questions
about the warrant for the up-coming annual town meeting. It will be
a good opportunity to find out about the issues in town. See you there.
