It's
not only the yummy chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate
chip pancakes that are bringing smiles from young diners at Linda
Jean's Restaurant in Oak Bluffs these days. Youngsters are also greeted
by their own, brand-new kids' menu that features games, puzzles, and
trivia questions. The menus will help young customers pass the time
while waiting for their hot dogs or French toast, and give them something
fun to do when the grown-up conversation at the table gets too boring.
Linda Jean's owner, Marc Hanover, can guarantee that the new menus
will be child-pleasers, because they were created by kids, for kids.
When Mr. Hanover decided this winter it was time to update the old
kids' menu, he put a call out for new ideas from young talent. In
March, Mr. Hanover announced a contest, offering local youngsters
$25 gift certificates for sending in usable menu ideas.
By the early April 11 deadline, many Island youngsters submitted ideas
or designs for use on the menus.
Mr. Hanover said this week that he was delighted with the large response
and impressed at the many clever ideas that were submitted. One of
his favorites was the intricate word search game created by 11-year-old
Emma HallsBilsback of West Tisbury.
What a phenomenal job some of these kids did! said Mr.
Hanover. An Island trivia quiz by nine-year-old Charlotte Lowell-Bettencourt
of Edgartown asks contestants to name three Island beaches and five
lighthouses. Kassidy Bettencourt, also of Edgartown, sent a challenging
word game, giving clues about how to identify a mystery pet. Taylor
Poggi of Edgartown submitted especially hard-to-answer questions like,
The Indian name Nunnepog was originally the name of what town?
Even adult diners could have a tough time with this quiz!
Along with these mind-benders, the menu includes a dot-to-dot drawing
(we think it will turn out to be a mysterious crustacean), and a tic-tac-toe
game suggested by first grader Emma Caron of Oak Bluffs.
Mr. Hanover says he wants to make sure customers will get a chance
to see all the winning entries. He said that the menu will be changed
regularly so that all the ideas and designs will be published. Meanwhile,
the many winners can order up hamburgers, hotdogs, pasta, and pancakes
at Linda Jean's, with the satisfaction of knowing they earned them
with their own creative talents.
Congratulations, Menu designers!
