If you have
any doubt that spring has really arrived, just glance at the flowers
that are blossoming in the yards throughout the town and Island.
For an especially attractive picture, take a ride by the town tennis
and basketball court park to admire the new beds of daffodils that
are now at their peak. We can thank the Oak Bluffs Highway and Park
Department leaders and employees for this pleasing display. Are
we not fortunate to live in a town where the employees not only
maintain the parks, roads and roadsides, but also care enough to
work so hard to enhance those areas with displays such as these?
Take time to let them know you appreciate this.
At their April 20 meeting, the Trinity United Methodist Women's
Group had a wonderful, meaningful speaker. Janice Perrin spoke to
the group about the Big Brother/Big Sister programs. Janice spoke
about how she was fortunate enough to have grown up in a loving,
caring family. She had always been the kind of person who looked
out for the underdog and that led her to her employment with Big
Brother/Big Sister. You might not be aware that the program is needed
and does exist on the Island. For more information on how you can
become involved with this wonderful program, call 508-693-5497.
Nancy and Donald Billings made a quick trip to Madison, Maine over
the weekend to check on their family cottage on Lake Wessurensett.
Nancy said the weather was very cold but at least the ice was out!
Andrew Welch of Hyannis brought his friend Jackie Dwyer to meet
his Dad, Chris Bobcat Man Welch, and stepmom, Amy Billings,
over the weekend. Andrew and Jackie will graduate in June from Barnstable
High School and will be in Boston this fall where Jackie will attend
Emmanuel Collage and Andrew will be at a community college studying
Firefighting Science.
Regarding the trip to New Bedford on May 4, the Up-Island Council
On Aging reports that they have reached their maximum for this trip
with those people who have already signed up. However, if you haven't
signed up yet, you may call John Tiernan at 866 453-6800 to see
if there is still room on the ferry for you to travel with his group.
In my absent-mindedness, I forgot to attend a very important birthday
party last Saturday. It was the annual Dog Birthday Party at Trade
Winds Park. Hosted by Anne and Duncan Ross every year, it is always
attended by numerous breeds of dogs along with their humans. Rumor
has it that it was a great success again this year with birthday
cake and dog treats being served.
A belated birthday smile is sent to Shelby Ponte who celebrated
birthday number three on April 22. Helping Shelby celebrate were
big brother Hunter and her mom and dad, Kenny and Erica Ponte.
Send your news my way and enjoy your week.
