Image from pbs.org Fly to the Tisbury School this evening for the opening of “Peter Pan.” The musical about a boy who wouldn't grow up has long been a favorite of children young and old. The most popular version of the musical was originally produced in 1954 by Jerome Robbins. However, earlier versions were produced, including one in 1950 with music by Leonard Bernstein, starring Boris Karloff and Jean Arthur. The James M. Barrie book has inspired many artists' interpretations, including the current movie “Finding Neverland,” starring Johnny Depp. The Tisbury School will add its own unique touch to the show, which will only run for two nights. Musical director Peter A. Boak promises a big surprise, but on this tiny Island it's hard to keep a secret. Yes, the children will be flying, as if by magic, in the Tisbury School production of “Peter Pan.” It may seem like magic but in reality it will by Flying By Foy, the premier theatrical flying company, who will provide the equipment and expertise to make it all possible. Flying By Foy flew Jean Arthur in “Peter Pan” back in 1950. Peter Foy then flew Mary Martin on Broadway, and every other Peter since the very beginning. Flying By Foy has revolutionized theatrical flying with the Track On Track system invented in 1958. This system was created for theaters with less than a 40-foot ceiling, the minimum required for flying actors. The Track On Track system allows two operators to independently control lift (up and down) and travel (side to side). The system is very safe, and safety is always Flying By Foy's number one concern. More than 50 years of innovation, technology, and experience are behind those ropes, so sit back and enjoy the show. Cheer on Peter in his ongoing fight with the nefarious Captain Hook; crow with the lost boys of Neverland; and clap like crazy to keep Tinkerbell alive. Long before Michael Jackson's version of Neverland became the subject of tabloid news, it was a magical place where growing up was forbidden and good triumphed over evil. The real Neverland will survive long after its infamous namesake is gone. “Peter Pan” runs Thursday, April 28, and Friday, April 29 at the Tisbury School. Curtain time: 6:30 pm.
