Thank you, Liza Coogan, for the marvelous drawing heralding Earth
Day on the cover of last week's Calendar section of the Times. We
need more of those. I am sure everyone enjoyed reading about Penny
Uhlendorf who embodies the idea of Earth Day all year long. And thank
you to all of you who went out to clean up the beaches and gather
the trash that had washed ashore.
That rare documentary that has romance, comedy and a surprise
ending
is being shown by the Martha's Vineyard Film Society.
One reviewer said that it makes you feel as if you could fly
out of the theater like a cherry headed parrot. Sounds like
a perfect springtime movie. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
will be shown at 7:30 pm on Saturday night at the Katharine Cornell
Theatre. It is rated G so you can bring the kids.
This is when the calendars start to fill up. It is one of the sure
signs of spring. Mark your calendar. Mother's Day is May 8 and the
Heath Hen Mother's Day Sale is Saturday, May 7. While you are doing
calendars, correct the date for Mother Goose to visit the library.
She will be there May 10, because she could not come on May 3.
The Tisbury Travel Club has a full calendar as well. They found some
conflicts in dates for one of the June trips. The visit to the Heritage
Museum and Gardens in Sandwich has now been changed to June 1. The
cost is $20. That includes the bus. To reserve your seat, call 508-696-4205.
I have been eagerly awaiting our own version of the Washington, D.C.
cherry blossoms. The trees are nearly ready to burst into bloom. Keep
an eye on the Bradford pear trees along Clough Lane. The buds look
like popcorn kernels, ready to explode at any moment.
Spring flowers are blooming all over town. The purple azaleas at the
Twin Oaks Inn/ Hanover House are just glorious. Hyacinths are perfuming
the air. Forsythia and daffodils bring a burst of sunshine into the
garden. Bright colored tulips are just starting to peep out in scattered
yards. Have you noticed how green everything looks?
Besides lovely blossoms, many different trees are beginning to show
an assortment of shades of greens. Even the ocean is getting into
the act. The water seems to be more colorful now than ever.
Even our road is celebrating spring. The road we live on is unpaved.
This was a tough winter on all of us, especially the road. The potholes
could be described as small ponds on rainy days. The garbage collectors
and deliverymen were not the only ones unhappy with it. Thanks to
the efforts and organization of Colleen Patrick, it has been spruced
up for spring.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Melanie Jane
Dickson.
Virginia Hackney marks a birthday on Friday, as does John McCarthy.
Birthday greetings this year go out in the same column to the Williamson
twins: Andrew celebrates on Saturday, the last day of April, and Ellie's
day is Sunday, the first of May. Lots of candles will mark the cake
for Anna Duarte on Wednesday.
Heard on Main Street: We humans are a contrary bunch. If you
tell a man that there are 400 billion stars, he'll believe you. If
you tell him a bench has wet paint, he has to touch it.
