My husband has a love/hate relationship with my garden. My vision
for the place was based on many of the old West Tisbury gardens I
had visited, filled with lilacs, dogwood, and viburnum, daffodils
and myrtle around their bases. Very homey and established looking,
not too manicured. Really not manicured at all. As I look out my windows
at the billowing lilac bushes and the carpet of flowers in the lawn
it looks beautiful to me, and a mess to Mike.
Sophie Block's garden on Music Street has violets blooming all across
and throughout her lawn. I have always loved the way that looks, so
I've never minded them creeping, flourishing, spreading out here.
White, purple, blue, rose, some with striped patterns, some pure color:
violets are blooming, surrounded by billions of baby seedlings. Mike
has devoted a substantial bit of time and effort into annihilating
every violet from our property, an effort in which he has totally
failed. One year, much to his Aunt Janice's and my amusement, he killed
off a goodly portion of his beloved grass while the targeted violets
survived. Not that he probably isn't plotting some new scheme as I
write this. But for the moment, the violets are saucily showing their
faces everywhere.
I guess Mike looks at his lawn with the same devotion. He dreams of
a pristine and lush carpet, green and perfectly manicured. Perched
atop this sward would be neatly pruned shrubs. I have never gone too
far with this conversation, not really wanting to know for sure, but
I suspect he might like to see trimmed geometry in place of nature.
On Friday, April 29, fourth and fifth grade students at the Chilmark
School will celebrate May Day. They will begin the day making May
Baskets and follow through a number of events, including traditional
dances taught by Lee Fierro.
The West Tisbury Library invites everyone to join us at the Music
Street Annex on Saturday, April 30 from 2 to 5 pm for a Farewell Party.
Leslie Baker and I are baking library-shaped cookies to serve. There
will be a silent auction of library items including the old card catalogue
cabinets, typewriters, furniture, signs, and artwork. I'm feeling
very nostalgic writing this; it has been a privilege for the town
to have use of that building again, beautifully restored. Thank you
to the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust for a very generous rental
agreement, and to our voters for supporting our tenure there. After
the party, we may need some volunteers with pick-up trucks to help
bring the sofa and chairs back to the main library, soon to be just
the library again.
Cathy Brennan, newly elected chair of the West Tisbury Town Democratic
Committee, will hold her first meeting Saturday morning, April 30,
10 am, at Howes House. The agenda will focus on simple bylaws, ways
to expand membership, and outreach to town Democrats. Any West Tisbury
Democrats and other interested townspeople are welcome to attend.
Passover was celebrated by many families across town this week. Mike
and I had been invited to attend a seder at the home of Leslie Baker
and David Gorenberg. We were unable to attend (now I have a cold,
making me persona non grata at all events), but Leslie kindly brought
us a complete Passover dinner and an invitation to attend in person
next year. She reported that it was a wonderful evening of good food,
good stories, a timeless ritual, and good friends. Attending were
Adele and Stan Schonbrun, Nicole Friedler, and Helen Koch. Leslie
and David's puppy, Zenobia, discovered matzo, which she liked. Happy
Passover to all.
