Labor Day there will be another flea market at the town hall from
10 am to 3 pm to support town activities. There will be beautiful
paintings and photography by Betty Boyd. Anthony Guyther will sell
necklaces, collages, and decorated matchboxes. Susie Schwoch is
selling Victorian paper-beaded jewelry; every bead is cut out, rolled,
glued, glazed, and then strung, all by her hands and heart. Kristina
Hook is selling antiques, railroad memorabilia, and baseball cards.
Sometimes my sister and I sell some of our many toys, books, movies…
anything we can find! Thanks to the wonderful lady who puts all
these flea markets together, Betty Joslow. Thank you Betty!

We’ve all seen it, during the remnants of Hurricane Charley or just any windy day, this huge white-and-blue kite on the waters off Moshup Trail. If you don’t know who or what that is then I am going to tell you. It is Isaac Taylor and he is a kite surfer. We talked about his passion for the sport. He told me he grew up here, surrounded by sea with, "not too many outlets to blow off steam; it seems a likely path, to ride the ocean waves." Isaac went to Kauai and saw kite surfing and met people who rode "into the sky, seemingly weightless, limitless, under the majestic kite." He found someone to give him lessons, in exchange for washing and hauling the gear to and from the beach. When Isaac returned to Aquinnah, he worked his own kite on Philbin Beach until he had enough control to surf with the kite. Isaac says that Dan Broderick is also an up-and-coming wave rider with his kite, but right now it’s Isaac we can see soaring high. If you looked up in the sky the other day, you probably saw Isaac sailing out to Devil’s Bridge. He told me "my board slid seamlessly over and around the huge boulders beneath, and I looked up at the cliffs, and from out there on the water, under the kite, I felt a sense of freedom, of fortune, and of limitless potential." Next time you’re driving along the beach and see a kite with a guy in the sky, wave "Hi" to your neighbor, Isaac Taylor.
The Bike Ferry is still up and running. It operates seven days a week from 8 am to 6 pm. Sadly, it stops running after Labor Day. So come enjoy a nice little ride with Captain Don Smith.
On Aug. 30, Mark and Jane Miller will be celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary. They will also be leaving Aquinnah to return to their other home state, Delaware, where son James will attend college. It’s the saddest part of summer when our friends and family leave. Let’s wish all safe journeys and a speedy return to Aquinnah.
Also going off to college is Matt Seeman who will attend Boston College for his sophomore year. His sister, Jessica, is heading back to Skidmore College for her senior year. Taylor Ives is going to a sophomore year at the University of Massachusetts. Good luck to all of you!
It’s also time for me to go back to school for the eighth grade, so this will be my last Aquinnah column. I will be busy with ice hockey, school work, track and field, and many other activities. It has been a pleasure writing this column and talking to my Aquinnah neighbors. Thank you for sharing your stories with me!
