The peculiar weather continues, with the weather reports still reporting
and predicting gale winds and rain even though the sun is occasionally
shining and the wind gusts are spasmodic and normal. The dire predictions
alarmed fishermen, but they kept on fishing anyway, catching goodly
numbers of bass. Or so I hear. And the rhododendrons are blooming
on schedule, and the lilacs will come into full flower any day.
Good luck to Jennifer Christy, who leaves the Chilmark Public Library
to take up the mantle of director at the Aquinnah Library. Jenny
had quite a following among the schoolchildren who came to her after-school
and vacation afternoons, where there were always new and exciting
things to learn, to read and to do. Library patrons and staff will
miss her original ideas and her cheerful presence.
William Wildey, winner of the Knapp award who has long been active
in ecumenical missionary work, spoke at a rally at the church last
Sunday on Water for Life. The church will help him raise
the $4,000 he needs to have a well drilled in Malawi, Africa to
provide safe drinking water for Malawi residents. Water was also
the focus of discussion during Sunday school classes.
The Rev. Nancy Collins will be off-Island attending the annual meeting
of the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church, as
well as on other business for the first three weeks of June. During
her absence, the Rev. Mary Jane OConnor-Ropp will be on call
for emergencies. Her number is 508-939-0589. Armen and Vicky Hanjian
will preach on Sundays.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 4 at 11 am at the
Home Port for Chester Cummens, who died last September at his home
in Naples, Fla. Mr. Cummens, who was known as Chet, will be remembered
by many as the owner of the Home Port for many years. Chet hired
and trained the young Will Holtham, later turning the restaurant
over to his apprentice.
Linda Ziegler will show her flower prints at the librarys
meeting room for the first two weeks in June. A graduate of the
Maryland Institute of Art, Linda is a long-time Islander who has
been active in art circles and teaches monoprint and monotype painting
to both adults and children at the Featherstone Center for the Arts.
Her prints are beautiful.
Dee Smith, chef and owner of Tea Lane Caterers, will demonstrate
and discuss the many uses of wonton wrappers at the library on Wednesday,
June 1 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Tasting included. The Wednesday programs
are sponsored by the Friends of the Library, and admission is free.
Everyone is welcome.
