I know that my predecessor wasn’t a big fan of the bridge and railings near Sweetened Water Pond, as it blocks the beautiful view of the pond. However, I was walking with the kids today and noticed that, though it does block the view from the road, it also provides a nice spot to stop and enjoy the view when on foot. In a way, it forces us to slow down and stop and take the time to enjoy the view rather than zipping by quickly. You can often see people standing on the bridge, leaning on the rail, enjoying the peaceful scenery.

Amelia Craig celebrated her third birthday in fine style on Friday, with big brother, Riley, and friends John and Matt Morris, and Oliver and Ruby Saffery. There was lots of food, wonderful presents, and of course, cake! The highlight of the evening was when John Francis, recently written up in another Island publication and visiting the Island for a while, joined the party.

John was on the Island this week to speak about his new book, “Planetwalker,” the 17 years that he went without speaking, and the 20,000 miles he has walked across the U.S., South America, Antarctica, and Cuba. He arrived at our party and proceeded to provide banjo music, which all but completely silenced the kids while creating a festive dance atmosphere. I can honestly say that it is the first time someone of note — or anyone, for that matter — has shown up and played banjo in my living room. And I hope that it isn’t the last! It will make for a fascinating entry in the story of Amelia’s life!

Tomorrow evening, Bill Hanna will be receiving a medal for 50 years as a member of the Masonic Lodge. When I spoke with Bill, he said he was very pleased to be receiving the honor and that his brother had received a similar medal a few years back. Apparently, it is fairly uncommon for two family members to receive these medals, so it’s extra special. Look for more news on the celebration next week, as I told Bill that I want to hear all about it afterwards.

Edgartown artist Donna Blackburn recently let me know of a wonderful event that she has planned for July 9 at St. Andrew’s Church Hall. It is called Art from the Heart for UNICEF and Donna thought it up as a way to help the victims of last December’s devastating tsunami. Local artists will be donating some of their artwork for the event, all of which will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to tsunami relief. The event will be on July 9 from 10 am until 4 pm. Some food will also be available. If you are a local artist who would like to take part, you can contact Donna at 508-627-8747. If you would like to admire and possibly obtain some of the artwork, mark your calendars for the event.

I received work from Duncan MacDonald that Phil Craig will be at the Vineyard Haven Library Street Fair on Sunday, June 12, to sign copies of his books. The street fair is from 1 to 4 pm and will have events for kids, home baked goodies, and items for sale.

Happy birthday wishes to Joe Robichau, who turned 101 on May 23.

The Edgartown Council on Aging will be having its annual lobster roll lunch at the Home Port on Friday, June 3. The cost of the event is $12 per senior and they ask that you call 627-4368 to sign up for the event.

Finally, we enjoyed a nice visit with one of Jamie’s Navy buddies, Commander Chris Rodeman, today. Chris is still on active duty in the Navy and had a lot of stories about his last few years serving in Italy and his excitement about his upcoming tour in Japan. Most of all, he was a reminder, especially with Memorial Day this weekend, of what our men and women in uniform are going through around the world. So, say a prayer or hold a good thought to keep them safe. And say a prayer for those who have served who are no longer with us.

Have a great week, everyone.
