For many people, Memorial Day conjures up visions of cookouts, warm
summer weather, and the start of an immense influx of visitors.
But for others, including myself, it brings back memories of parades,
a sense of pride tinged with sadness for so many who sacrificed
and are still sacrificing so much so that we here can enjoy the
freedoms and comforts that we have. So on Monday, go to Vineyard
Haven to watch the Memorial Day Parade. Start-up time at the Legion
Hall is 9:45 am on their route to the cemetery. Applaud the groups
as they proudly march and take a moment to thank those who give
their time each year so that this tradition is carried on. Fly the
flag proudly and remember those still in harms way, protecting
all of us.
The next few weeks promise to be busy indeed with all the special
events planned. Oak Bluffs Library Director Linda Norton is resigning
effective May 28. On May 27, the staff, Library Board of Trustees
and members of the Friends of the Oak Bluffs Library will host a
party in her honor at the library from noon to 3 pm. All library
patrons and friends are welcome to come and give Linda a hearty
send-off to her next endeavors. Several items are still being sold
to benefit the Oak Bluffs Library Building Fund. Among them are
those handy note cubes, and practical bookbags that are so useful
for carrying all kinds of loads. And lastly, the Arts in The Library
raffle is continuing.
The Marthas Vineyard Regional High School Class of 1975 held
its 30th class reunion last Saturday at a dinner buffet at the Portuguese-American
Club in Oak Bluffs. Many former students attended and the evening
was live with memories of high school events. Some of the Oak Bluffs
alumni/ae attending were Mary MacDonald, Diane Surprenant Beckwith,
Michael Correira , George Fisher, Keith, Anthony and Celeste Moreis
and Kristen Anderson. Kristen came the furthest all the way from
St. Pete Beach, Florida. Her son, Ian, is looking forward to visiting
his grandparents, Maureen and Bill Anderson, in July when he will
accompany his mother for their annual summer vacation here. Ian
was recently inducted into the National Jr. Honor Society.
The PTO at the Oak Bluffs School is continuing their playground
renovations. On June 11 they will be starting work at 9 am to put
the finishing touches on the main playground, which should only
involve a few hours work. They are going to be building a new playground
for the middle school and anyone interested is invited to come and
join them. Meantime, work continues on the Kindergarten playground
renovation.
On Thursday, June 9, from 6 to 9 pm, a grand celebration will take
place at the Mediterranean Restaurant on the harbor in Vineyard
Haven. This is to benefit the Marthas Vineyard Cancer Support
Group, which has been helping Island cancer patients and their families
for almost 20 years. This group meets every Wed. at noon at the
Hebrew Center in Vineyard Haven. For more information, contact Jane
Carroll at 696-9849 or at jcarrollmv@aol.com.
Our Act of Random Kindness Award goes to all those patient people
who so kindly allow drivers, who feel they are stuck forever attempting
to join in the main stream of traffic, to exit the side roads and
proceed on their way.
Enjoy you week and send your news along.
