Elinor C. Muller

Miss Elinor C. (Nora) Muller died peacefully on April 30 at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She had been an independent, year-round resident of her beloved East Chop home since 1982. Nora had moved to Windemere this January because of deteriorating health. She was born on January 16, 1919, and was 86 years old.

Nora was the daughter of Edward N. and Flora Muller, who first came to Martha’s Vineyard as summer visitors in 1927. Nora grew up on Staten Island and graduated from Staten Island Academy in 1937 and Bradford Junior College in 1939. She worked for Union Carbide in New York City for over 30 years, became head Law Librarian and was recognized with numerous professional awards. Nora was an active member of the American Association of Law Librarians.

During World War II, Nora served as an American Red Cross hospital-trained worker stationed at Miller Field on Staten Island, N.Y. where she greeted and assisted troops returning from battle.

Upon her retirement to the Vineyard, Nora joined the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library and was Chairman of the Volunteers at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. She was a devoted and dedicated supporter of Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, where she volunteered her time regularly. Nora was also a member of the East Chop Beach Club.

Nora particularly appreciated good food, good stories, good bourbon, and good friends. She traveled extensively during her retirement, from Greece to the Caribbean to Portugal to Arizona. She played bridge regularly, loved to dine out at fine restaurants, enjoyed a great party and adored attending the ballet. Nora will be remembered for her quick wit, sharp tongue, intelligence, honesty and lively sense of humor, all of which stayed with her until the end. She was a loyal and supportive friend to those who were lucky to know her well.

She is survived by two nephews, Richard Muller of Oregon and Samuel Muller of California; two great-nieces, Alexandra Arboleda of Phoenix, Ariz., and Sarah Dick of Tucson, Ariz.; and a great-nephew, Edward N. Muller IV of Springfield, Ore. Her brother, E.N. Muller, Jr., predeceased her, as did her nephew, E.N. Muller, III. Nora leaves behind numerous friends of all ages who appreciated her strong character and comedic timing. She will be especially missed by James Bryan, Emma Carmichael, Kit Sanders and Tom and Barbara Willmott.

Donations may be made in her memory to the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, P.O. Box 494, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568 or to Hospice of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 2549, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 23 at 10:30 am on East Chop.

Lawrence Mayher

Lawrence ‘Linnie’ Mayher died peacefully at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on May 15 with her family by her side. She had been lovingly cared for at the Henrietta Brewer House in Vineyard Haven since the fall of 2001.

Lawrence Dunham Mayher was born Matilda Lawrence Dunham on July 27, 1913 in Elk Ridge, Md., daughter of Katharine Davis Dunham and Francis Herbert Dunham. Her family called her “Lawncie,” and she was “Linnie” to many of her friends. Her name provided further entertainment when she married Laurence Mayher.

The Dunham family moved to Sewickley, Pa., where Linnie attended the Sewickley Academy. She spent her senior year at the Low Heywood School back in Baltimore, where she became lifelong friends with Harriet Franklin Boyd, who later also developed a Vineyard connection. Linnie went on to nursing school at Johns Hopkins, at the same time studying piano at the Peabody School of Music. After graduation she worked as a visiting nurse in New York’s inner city.

It was “love at first sight” for Linnie and Laurie Mayher. They married in 1947 and Linnie moved to Cleveland to join Laurie and his four children — Phil, Margie, Ellie, and Molly. Within four years the family grew even more active with the births of Katie and Gretchen. Linnie was on her way to becoming the most popular mom in the neighborhood.

Over the years, Linnie took on many challenges, including as an officer of the Consumers League of Ohio, working to improve the living conditions of migrant workers. She was active in St. Paul’s Church, and when Martin Luther King, Jr. came to speak she proudly was the first to greet him there. She also took her skills and compassion into Cleveland’s inner city classrooms to read, play, and sing with the students.

One of Linnie’s life-long passions was playing the piano. She took lessons from the acclaimed Russian duo pianist Vitya Vronsky Babin, and also supported young students at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where husband Laurie served as a trustee.

After Laurie’s death in 1986, Linnie moved to Martha’s Vineyard where she quickly became active as a volunteer at the Community Solar Greenhouse, on the board of Family Planning of Martha’s Vineyard, at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (making patients’ beds with her friend and sidekick Ruth Schaffner), and at the Vineyard Haven Public Library (shelving books with her friend Yvonne LaBrecque). As an avid reader, she sometimes was tempted to check out an armful of the books she was supposed to be shelving. Linnie enjoyed playing four-hand piano with her friend Florence Flanders, and having entertaining dates with friends Selma and Rea Frank and Louise Gurren. Linnie was a member of Grace Episcopal Church when she first came to the Vineyard, and later joined the Unitarian Universalist Society.

Linnie took delight in attending her grandchildren’s academic, theatrical, and athletic events. She also loved to travel, including on journeys with family to Boston, Vermont, Hilton Head, Sarasota, and Italy.

Linnie is survived by her sister Mary Graham of Hilton Head, S.C.; her daughters, Molly Mayher of Waialua, Hi., Eleanor Hackett of Cambridge, Margaret Ramsdell of Craftsbury Common, Vt., Katharine Kane of Vineyard Haven, and Gretchen Mayher of Oak Bluffs, and her son Philip Mayher and his wife Carolyn of Norwich, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two nieces; three nephews; and many grandnieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, June 8 at 1:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Society, Main St., Vineyard Haven. Donations in Linnie’s memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Service of Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, P.O. Box 369, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568; the Martha’s Vineyard Boys and Girls Club, P.O. Box 654, Edgartown, MA 02539; or Family Planning of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 909, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs. Visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com for online guest book and information.

A Masonic service will commence at 12:30 pm offered by the Oriental-Martha’s Vineyard Masonic Lodge. His burial will immediately follow the funeral home service at the New Westside Cemetery, off Robinson Road, Edgartown with full military honors offered by the Veterans of Martha’s Vineyard.
