series
On Island Writing, a new television series, premiers next Wed., June
1, at 8 pm, on MVTVs Channel 13, the Community Access Channel.
The series, scheduled to air every Wednesday at 8 pm, will feature
a variety of aspects of Island writing, including interviews with
visiting editors, agents, and publishers, writers reading from and
discussing their work, and talks on writing techniques. In the first
half-hour program, the Cleaveland House Writers Group talks
about the advantages and disadvantages of writers groups, and
members speak about their works in progress. The producer is Jonathan
Revere; the host is Cynthia Riggs. For information, contact Cynthia

Get up on your stilts
The Community Dance Festival, Built on Stilts, is accepting reservations
for the August season. Visit the groups web site at www.builtonstilts.org
for registration information. The deadline to enroll is July 1.Art
beatNo matter what the weather, there is plenty of beauty to be found
all over the Island. This Memorial Day weekend offers much to see
for art lovers.
A new gallery is opening at the Five Corners intersection in Vineyard
Haven. The proprietors of Goddess Way Gallery calls their space unique,
eclectic, and friendly. Look for a variety of themed shows, and special
exhibits. Portions of the profits will be donated toward children
and womens causes as well as other organizations offering help
to those in need.
While near Five Corners, visit the Louisa Gould Gallery for the season
opener, Sail Into Summer. A Friday night reception gives
you an opportunity to say hello to Ms. Gould and see her photographs
from Antarctica and Patagonia.
Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs will hold a reception
on Sunday, May 29 from 4 to 6 pm for photographer Paul Rezendes. His
new book Marthas Vineyard Seasons is the result
of 20 years of dedication to capturing the Islands beauty. Times
staffer Tony Omer contributed seasonal essays and a preface to the
book. Along with Mr. Rezendess photos, see the work of 15 other
Vineyard artists.
Take time to stroll the arts district of Oak Bluffs. The Dukes County
Arts District opens its doors to celebrate the start of a new season
on Saturday, May 28 from 4 to 7 pm.
Visit Periwinkle Studio which is featuring hand-painted clothing and
beaded jewelry by Vineyard Sky Bead Design. A stop at PIK-NIK is a
trip down memory lane with the shop full of antiques and vintage house
wares. The Marthas Vineyard Center for the Visual Arts at the
Firehouse Gallery presents a members art show, and Holly Alaimo
at the Dragonfly Gallery will host an artists reception for
Sarah French, Magi Leland, and Amy Wynne Derry during Saturdays
stroll.
