Buck Reidy and Taffy McCarthy in "Closer Than Ever," a musical revue about contemporary living and relationship choices that opens tonight.

Jennifer Kish in a coy moment from "Closer Than Ever." A benefit for Island Theatre Workshop's Children's Theatre will take place on Saturday, May 28.

A musical revue of a little known, yet impressive show titled “Closer Than Ever” opens tonight at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. Director Linda Berg brings the songs of Richard Maltby Jr., and David Shire to local stages in a revue sponsored by the Island Theatre Workshop.

Maltby and Shire found success with their show, “Baby,” which had a modest run of 241 shows in the 1983-84 season. Keeping to their themes of life’s transitions, “Closer Than Ever” examines love and life as time goes on. “Closer Than Ever” ran for 288 performances between October 1990 and the following July at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York.

The Island production features the considerable musical talents of Jennifer Kish, Taffy McCarthy, Buck Reidy, and Kevin Ryan in the roles of people looking for, finding, losing, and regaining the joy of life. The songs include “She Loves Me Not,” about the pain of unrequited love, and “What Am I Doin’?” sung by a man who is driven crazy by his love for a woman. A mid-life crisis is met head-on in “Patterns” and “The March of Time” examines the inevitability of aging.

The original revue of “Closer Than Ever” enjoyed raves from the critics. Island audiences are sure to agree when four talented singers bring us the show.

“Closer Than Ever” runs Thursday, May 26, Friday, May 27, Sunday, May 29, Wednesday, June 1, Thursday, June 2, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, Spring Street, Vineyard Haven, curtain time, 8 pm, tickets, $15.

A special benefit performance for ITW’s Children’s Theatre will be presented on Saturday, May 28, at Mattakesett Playhouse in Katama. Curtain time, 7:30 pm, tickets, $50.
