Gabriel in the sky with diamonds

Meet Gabriel Ofiesh, jewelry artist and creator of the “Orbit Collection,” on Friday, July 8, from 10 am to 9 pm at Optional Art, 7 Winter Street in Edgartown. Besides his signature rings orbiting around rings in precious stones and 18-karat white or yellow gold, Optional Art will also feature his exotic colored gemstone and pavé diamond jewelry. Through July 10. Call 508-627-5373 or visit optionalart.com for more details.

Change of day, change of perspective

Shaw Cramer Gallery will hold a special Saturday (as opposed to their usual Friday) reception for painter Wendy Weldon. Also special, Ms. Weldon has recently combined her traditional interest in the Island’s stone walls with a new perspective in color and light for a fresh new look to her acrylic landscapes. The reception is this Saturday, July 9, from 6 to 8 pm. The gallery, on Main Street in Vineyard Haven, hosts the show through July 21. For more info, call 508-696-7323.

Oliver Doriss: “Architectural Forms”

Imagine a skyline of glass. Oliver Doriss, inspired by the buildings he’s admired on his international travels, created a series of glass vessels called “Architectural Forms.” Meet the artist at a reception on Sunday, July 10, from 5 to 7 pm at Martha’s Vineyard Glassworks, 683 State Road in West Tisbury. The show runs through July 23. 508-693-6026.

Art in a day for a week

Featherstone’s annual “Art in a Day” auction has expanded. Beginning at noon on Sunday, July 10 and extending through Sunday, July 17 Featherstone will hold a silent auction for the original works of 40 Vineyard artists. At 4:30 pm on July 17 the silent auction ends and at 6:30 pm, a live auction begins, featuring radio personality Upton Bell with the gavel. Proceeds benefit Featherstone and the participating artists. The silent auction will begin at noon and end at 4:30 pm daily. Admission to the live auction is $20. Featherstone Center for the Arts is located on Barnes Road, one quarter mile north of the four-way stop in Oak Bluffs. 508-693-1850.

A Sculptural excursion to Zimbabwe

Our own Don Lyons and spouse Joan Merry travel extensively and have brought back artwork from around the world. In a stop at the Zimbabwe village of Tengenenge they discovered and acquired a large selection of contemporary sculpture, featuring unique and varied stones. The not as well-traveled can live vicariously and view these discoveries at Forget Me Not Antiques at 496 State Road in West Tisbury. A reception will be held on Sunday, July 10, from 5 to 7 pm. 508-693-1788.

Intimate views of flowers

When Nancy Noble Gardner photographs flowers, she gets right in their faces. For a close and closer look at the movement and power of posies, view “Dancing Day Lilies and Other Photographs” at Old Sculpin Gallery. Join the artist at a reception on Sunday, July 10, from 6 to 8 pm, at the home of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association on Dock Street in Edgartown. The exhibition runs through July 15. The continuing show features Ben Scott, Ben Cabot, and Marston Clough. 508-627-4881.

Art, lit, and music

Attend the artists’ reception at Cousen Rose Gallery on Saturday, July 9, from 7 to 9 pm and be treated to a cultural hat trick of art, literature, and music. Stephen D. Rose, the only artist who has shown for all of 26 years the gallery has been in business, will show his seascapes and landscapes painted in acrylics on oblong canvases. Catherine Green, new to the gallery, displays her still life and landscape serigraphs. Authors Robert Hayden and Phil Hart will sign copies of their books, “African Americans on Martha’s Vineyard,” and “Bessie Coleman,” respectively. As always, Peter MacLean will guide the atmosphere with his artful piano renditions.

Cousen Rose Gallery is at 71 Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. The visual arts portion will continue through July 15. 508-693-6656.
