Chilmark

, 2005

Does anyone celebrate the Fourth ON the fourth? It looked as though all the weekend visitors were rushing for the ferry to get home ahead of the traffic.

Congratulations to all the graduating fifth graders, and best wishes and good luck next year.

The Hot Issue – and the final one — of The Chilmark Times, the newspaper put out by the fourth and fifth graders, is filled with news, essays, poems, entertainment and think pieces. The cover displays odes to the joys of summer written by K-1 students. Inside, among other things, is “The Person of the Month,” Lee Fierro, who taught students the Maypole dance, by Spencer Booker. The word of the month by Zoli Clarke, is malacologist, and none of the people she interviewed knew what it meant. Check next week’s column for the answer. Amalie Tinus and Lily Morgan stated the case for cell phones in an editorial headed “Students Need Cell Phones,” and Natalie Poole wrote another opinion piece, “Kids Should be Able to Have I-Pods in School.” (I have always known I went to school too soon.) Senior editor Rebecca Barca Tinus praised the students for their work putting out the paper, calling them an “intelligent, thoughtful group of young people.”

On to other news. Jane And Eugene Rust of Hingham are at their Stonewall Beach camp for the summer.

Diana and Norman Freed have been enjoying a visit with their new two-month-old grandson Calvin and his older brother Orion, two, and their parents Melissa and Andrew Freed of West Lafayette, Indiana.

Wendy Weldon is opening a show of her paintings tomorrow at the Shaw Cramer Gallery in Vineyard Haven. The show will be up until July 21. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 9 from 6 to 8 pm.

There’s quite a variety in John Wightman’s show of photographs, opening Saturday, July 9 at the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard. He will introduce 18 new images for 2005, some with wampum, some with beach grass incorporated into the framing, retrospective images from 1980-2004, and images on watercolor paper. The opening reception is Saturday July 9 from 4 to 8 pm at the bank.

The library is jumping these days. Lillian Kellman‘s storytelling for school-age children starts on Saturday, July 9, 10:30–11:30 am. Beloved by Chilmark school children, Ms. Kellman has been telling them stories for the last 20 years, and will continue through the summer, on Saturday mornings at the library.

Young adults, 12 to 17 years of age, will meet at the library on Wednesday, July 13 from 5:30 to 6:30.

And the talk series, sponsored by the Friends of the Library and meeting Wednesdays and Thursdays, will present Jane Finnerty on Thursday, July 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. She will demonstrate the use of Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 in editing photos from digital cameras.

The summer program at the community center is off and running. There will be a Joel Noe memorial barbecue tomorrow, July 8 at 6:30 pm, followed at 8 pm by a barn dance. At the community center.

The “art for adults” program at the community center will begin next Wednesday July 13 in the art shack from 5 to 7:30 pm. Linda Thompson will teach scrapbooking, and urges you to bring your favorite photos and other treasures. Space is limited so it’s best to preregister by calling the center at 508-645-9484.

The Yard will present another movie, “Carmen and Geoffrey” at 7:30 pm on Thursday, July 14.
