Does anyone celebrate the Fourth ON the fourth? It looked as though
all the weekend visitors were rushing for the ferry to get home
ahead of the traffic.
Congratulations to all the graduating fifth graders, and best wishes
and good luck next year.
The Hot Issue and the final one of The Chilmark Times,
the newspaper put out by the fourth and fifth graders, is filled
with news, essays, poems, entertainment and think pieces. The cover
displays odes to the joys of summer written by K-1 students. Inside,
among other things, is The Person of the Month, Lee
Fierro, who taught students the Maypole dance, by Spencer Booker.
The word of the month by Zoli Clarke, is malacologist, and none
of the people she interviewed knew what it meant. Check next weeks
column for the answer. Amalie Tinus and Lily Morgan stated the case
for cell phones in an editorial headed Students Need Cell
Phones, and Natalie Poole wrote another opinion piece, Kids
Should be Able to Have I-Pods in School. (I have always known
I went to school too soon.) Senior editor Rebecca Barca Tinus praised
the students for their work putting out the paper, calling them
an intelligent, thoughtful group of young people.
On to other news. Jane And Eugene Rust of Hingham are at their Stonewall
Beach camp for the summer.
