Film: Summer films blossom
July 7, 2005

A time to celebrate

In the summer of 1944, three trainloads of boys arrived in Auschwitz. Twenty-five of them survived and they now get together annually to celebrate May 5, the day of their liberation, and the date each has taken as his official birthday. “The Birthday Party,” the latest documentary by Ruth Walk, Israel’s current Laureate of the Prize of the Art of Cinema, features their remarkable stories and a birthday bash unlike any other. The film will be shown on Sunday, July 10, as the Boston Jewish Film Festival on Martha’s Vineyard continues.

Also screening is Keren Margalit’s evocative Israeli film “All I’ve Got,” the story of a dying woman who is given the opportunity to reunite with her first love, who died at 22. If she goes to him, however, she must sacrifice the memories of her life with her husband and children.

Birthday cake will be served before the films begin in honor of the men in “The Birthday Party.”

Films begin at 7:30 pm. Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, Center Street, Vineyard Haven. 508-693-0745.

Birds of a feather — story of hope.

The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society’s Tabernacle Film Series opens this Tuesday, July 12, with the family-oriented and whimsical documentary, “Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.”

Telegraph Hill is a neighborhood in one of the hillier sections of San Francisco that over the years has become home to a large flock of wild parrots. While no one is certain how they got there, the birds were for the most part left to their own devices until they were discovered by Mark Bittner, a self-described “Dharma bum.” Bittner’s friendship with the parrots became a growth experience that taught the guitarist as much about himself as it did about the birds, and with the passage of time, his work earned him the respect of his community as well as a home.

“Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill,” at the Tabernacle, Campground, Oak Bluffs, Tuesday, July 12, 8 pm. 508-696-9369 or visit www.mvfilmsociety.com.
