Music: Willie Mason and friends at the Roof
July 7, 2005

Among the young faithful fans who turned out for the all-ages show were (from left) Krista Brown, Mara Azzollini, and Iris Grace.

Willie Mason showed up only a little late for his first headliner at the Hot Tin Roof Friday, slinging his acoustic guitar around his shoulder and joining right in with the last part of the Unbusted’s high-volume opening set.

A 2003 graduate of MVRHS, Willie has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success both at home and abroad. He has toured across the country as well as in Europe and Japan, most recently playing alongside the likes of Coldplay and The White Stripes at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival in Glastonbury, England.

Willie parted company with the Unbusted, after a few insider pleasantries — including a rowdy hello to various bandmember’s moms who were in the crowd.

Willie’s handpicked personnel then filed out and surrounded him like a constellation of pals who happened to be accomplished players. The band Friday featured regular backup members plus a contingent of drop-ins: Nina Violet, viola; Matt Rosenthal, bongos and flute; Willie’s brother Sam on drums; Farley Glavin on bass; and Colin Ruel, slide Telecaster. They filled the stage like a comfortable, loosely knit musician gang more from the Big Pink era than the 21st century.

Willie seems to bring his dedicated audience and the band along with him to all his Island venues. Most of the dancers near the stage were folks he’s grown up with. The all-ages crowd included many young fans along with parents and adult friends who have followed Willie’s career with pride. It made for a real Island-style show, and a great night at the Roof.
