Oak Bluffs
July 7, 2005

By Megan Alley - 508-693-0850 - meganislandmegan@verizon.net

This lovely Fourth of July morning is greeting me with my flags lazily swaying in the slight breeze as if beckoning people to come along as the celebrations will soon be starting. The crowds arrived over the weekend and let’s face it, there are definitely too many cars crowded into too small a space. This means we all have to use extra caution and be a lot nicer than we really are in order to allow safe passage along the roads. So be patient and if you can safely do so, allow that unhappy person waiting at the side road to enter the traffic in front of you. And one more thing: do it with a smile, not a grimace. You will be surprised how good it will make you feel.

David Wright, son of Judith Wright, married his long-time girlfriend Carolyn Jones last month. They “eloped” and were married at Cambridge City Hall because, as Judy said, “they didn’t want all the normal hoopla.” Their families are very happy and we offer congratulations.

The Oak Bluffs Public Library has something new going on. Every Tuesday evening from 6 until 7: 30 pm from July 5 to August 23 will be Family Board Games Night as well as a Yu-Gi-Oh Tournament. You need to bring your own cards and sign up at the Children’s Desk to play. On Thursday, July 7, as part of the Summer Reading Program, there will be a reading of the “Sea and Fairies” and making Flower Fairies for children six through 10. Also on Thursdays, will be Going to the Sea — boating safety classes with Ron Walsh for grades K through three at 10 am and for grades four through six at 11:30 am. To keep more children busy, the program “Going to Hogwarts: magical reading and wizard crafts,” for ages 6-10, will take place at10:30 am.

What an enjoyable concert was presented last Saturday at the Tabernacle in the Campgrounds by our own Island Community Chorus. Such wonderful talent was on display. Make sure you attend their next concert and you will be amazed.

Save July 16 for the annual summer fair and luncheon sponsored by the Trinity United Methodist Women. It will take place in the Campground from 10 am until 2 pm. The luncheon is held from 11:30 am until 2 pm, and what a great menu: the ladies are serving delicious clam chowder, dark green salad, beverage, and strawberry shortcake with real whipped cream for dessert. If you want further information, call Betty Daniels at 508-693-2621.

The Silver Screen Film Society is planning a great series of films this summer on Tuesday nights in the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. Coming up for July 12 is “Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” and “Rivers and Tides.” For further information, visit http://www.mvfilmsociety.com.

Enjoy your week, and let me know what is going on in your lives.
