Landscapes
and locals by Hermine Hull
Hermine Merel Smith Fine Art will have an opening reception this Sunday,
July 10, 4 to 7 pm, at 548 Edgartown Rd., West Tisbury. Painter/owner
Hermine Smith Hull will exhibit her oil paintings of Island landscapes
and local people. The paintings are a diary of my life, my friends
visiting the studio, my views from house and studio windows, where
I walk or drive during the day, said the artist.
Kent shows landscapes with a twist
Painter Doug Kent opens a show of his new landscapes Wednesday, July
13, 4 to 8 pm, at his West Tisbury gallery on Indian Hill Road, just
past Christiantown Road. In 30 years of living and painting here,
Kent has assimilated the Vineyard landscape. But images foreign to
that landscape appear in his work, creating a fascinating ambiguity
among what is seen, felt, imagined, and real. The paintings are populated
with animals standing witness against backgrounds of color. Food for
eye and thought.
Inspiration at Cottagers Corner
Women Doing Inspiring Work Internationally is the theme
Tuesday, July 12, at the Cottagers Corner in Oak Bluffs when
Catherine Murphy shows an excerpt from her documentary about Cuban
women working in a literacy campaign on that Island. Ms. Murphy has
lived in Cuba for 15 years and lectures internationally about her
greening and gardening work in Cuba, Venezuela, and India.
Ms. Murphy and organizer Becca Prager will also speak about and honor
their friend, Marla Ruzicka, who was killed in Iraq doing humanitarian
aid work.
Island girl celebrates first novel
Island native May V. Oskan has published her first novel, Becoming
the Crane, a fantasy novel combining classical and contemporary
styles to suit readers of all ages. A book release party will take
place Wednesday, July 13, at the Arts District Exchange, 116 Dukes
County Ave., in Oak Bluffs. May will be on hand for a book signing
while her sister, Nina Violet, will provide live music. For more information,
call 508-693-4219.
