Tisbury

The Tisbury Travel Club lives up to its name. By boat and bus and
finally by train, many of your neighbors enjoyed a day of off-Island
travel last week. On Wednesday the club went to Hyannis to board the
Cape Cod Train for an elegant gourmet lunch served during a scenic
trip through meadows and salt marshes and small villages to Sandwich
and along the bank of the Cape Cod Canal. Sandy Whitworth carefully
herded the crowd into a semblance of order at necessary intervals
along the way.
We enjoyed a visit last week from an old friend, Sandy Brennan, of
Loon Brook Farm in Colebrook, Conn. Dr. Brennan will soon be retiring
from her position as professor of nursing at the University of Hartford.
She and I enjoyed sharing a table with Helen Burt and Ruth Stiller
in the dining car of the Cape Cod Train. Sandy and I met in Sunday
school in Winsted, Connecticut. I cannot remember whether we were
five or six, many more years ago than I care to count. We have enjoyed
getting together over the years whenever we can.
Sandy enjoys her trips to the Island and prefers looking at stores
that sell antique jewelry. There were also the obligatory visits to
the Black Dog Tavern and general store. One of the pleasures of having
guests is going to places I would not ordinarily see.
Yesterday was the grand opening of Bryn Walker PacifiCotton in its
new location. The employees are happy to have new open space for the
shop, and the rest of us are pleased to get back the parking places
that were used for construction vehicles on Main Street. Stop by to
see the new shop.
Saturday is a good day to run. Sign up for the Run the Chop Challenge
to benefit Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard. You
can register online at murdicks.net or at the Tisbury School from
7–8 am. The racers will leave the Tisbury School at 9 am for
the five-mile road race around the Chop.
Ed Colligan says the veterans need all the help they can get next
Monday. For the Fourth of July they will be setting up over 300 flags
along the Avenue of Flags in Oak Grove Cemetery at 7:30 am. The flags
come down at 3 pm. Your help is needed, so put it on your calendar.
No need to call, just plan to appear at these times.
Belated birthday greetings to Claire Stefanik. Her birthday was last
Wednesday. She and her husband, the Rev. Al, were among the travelers
on the Cape train. She was serenaded by the diners during the trip.
Al is the interim pastor at Grace Episcopal Church.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Lynne Benson,
owner of The Heath Hen Quilt Shop. Celebrating on Saturday is Sioux
Eagle whose beautiful jewelry designs are a treat. Sunday is a big
day. Happy birthday on Sunday to Bob Benson and Cora Medeiros. Also
partying on Sunday is Larry Gomez, owner of The Greenwood House Bed
and Breakfast. I see it is a big one this year, Larry. We will all
be celebrating on the Fourth in honor of our nation’s birthday.
Sue Fairbanks, Steve Nichols, and Frances Darling mark that day as
well. We wish them all a bang-up birthday.
Heard on Main Street: Whatever happens to you, it will previously
have happened to everyone you know, only more so.
