This Week In Art
July 28, 2005

In this week’s Calendar, and throughout July and August, look here for clips on current art exhibits and upcoming receptions and shows. All content is solely provided by advertisers in ART, which is available at participating galleries, visitor centers, inns, and on the boats. For more comprehensive listings, see Art Events at a Glance.

See the light at the All Island Art Show

The Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs will be filled with the work of Island artists on Monday, Aug. 1, from 10 am to 4 pm. Two artists in particular shine in their depictions of the Island. Fine art photographer Debra Gaines and painter Christine Alesch use soft light and muted colors to bring a sleepy calmness to their views of the Vineyard. Seek them out among the other talented Island artists.

Bipeds and quadrapeds in oil

Jain Tarnower’s oil paintings defy description. They’re a little like DreamWorks meets Pennsylvania Dutch with a touch of air brushing. Her quirky canvases depict mostly sheep, dogs, lambs, birds, chipmunks, people, and other creatures, usually posed by the sea. Dragonfly Gallery will be showing Tarnower’s work in a show that runs from Aug. 3 to 14, with a reception on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 4 to 7 pm. The gallery is at the corner of Dukes County Avenue and Vineyard Avenue in Oak Bluffs. 508-693-8877.

Rebirth and transformation

Richard Hoffman is reborn and Ovid Osborn Ward transforms in an exhibition at hastings in the alley (at Harbor Alley behind Tsunami) in Oak Bluffs. Hoffman rejoins the art world after 12 years with new abstract work that depicts our sub-atomic elements. Ward abandons his crisp photorealism for paintings with huge, sweeping strokes and bright, vivid colors. These artistic revolutions are kicked off with a reception featuring “pink champagne and soft cheese” on Friday, July 29, from 5 to 8 pm. Call 508-693-7444 for details.

Island views in three mediums

“Island Colors,” the new show at Louisa Gould Gallery features new photographs of this and other islands by Louisa Gould, watercolors of the Vineyard by Leslie Miller, and Island-inspired jewelry by Rani Connor. The exhibition begins with a reception on Friday, July 29, from 5 to 8 pm at Louisa Gould Gallery, 13 Beach St. Ext. in Vineyard Haven. 508-693-7373.

Monotype series

Sheila Fane describes the Island in a series titled “Views Large and Small.” Working in monotypes and other unique original prints, she creates Island landscapes and seascapes. She’s joined by expressionist painter Theresa Yuan in an exhibition at Old Sculpin Gallery on Dock Street in Edgartown. The show runs from July 30 through Aug. 5, with a reception on July 31 from 6 to 8 pm. 508-627-4881.

Four artists talking

Eva Gallant, Dawn Greeley, Jennifer McCurdy, and Adele Schonbrun discuss texture and inspirations, using restraint to work in black and white, using light and shadow in sculpture, subtle complexities, glazes and imagery as part of Shaw Cramer Gallery’s “Artist Talks” series. The discussion takes place at the gallery on Main Street in Vineyard Haven this Friday, July 29, at 6:30 pm. The series features Island artists exclusively. 508-696-7323.

K.C. Diamonds and Roberto Coin

Jewelry by Italian designer Roberto Coin and New York design firm K.C. Diamonds will grace the cases at Optional Art, beginning on Thursday, July 28, from 10 am to 5:30 pm. K.C. Diamonds produces playful, young, and classical pieces at reasonable prices. Roberto Coin, produces 18-karat white and yellow gold pieces in Vicenza, Italy. The show runs through July 31. Optional Art is at 7 Winter Street in Edgartown. 508-627-5373.

What’s new at Craven Gallery

Beginning on Saturday, July 30, and running through Friday, Aug. 12, Carol Craven presents the photographs of Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe and the paintings of Catharine Balco and Eve Mansdorf. An artists’ reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 7 pm. Carol Craven Gallery is located at 29 Breakdown Lane, off Holmes Hole Road, in Vineyard Haven. 508-693-3535.

Triple threat at Cousen Rose

Lynn Hoeft, Louise Minks, and Marietta Cleasby combine talents for a three-person show at Cousen Rose Gallery, 71 Circuit Ave., Oak Bluffs. Lynn Hoeft uses watercolors to create very finely detailed images of feathers, fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Louise Minks uses vivid color to produce impressionistic Vineyard scenes in acrylic. Marietta Cleasby favors architectural subjects in her oils, watercolors, and acrylics. The show opens Saturday, July 30, with a reception from 7 to 9 pm, and runs through August 5. 508 693-6656.

Artists in residence at Featherstone

Visiting Featherstone Center for the Arts are renowned artists Darryl Hughto and Susan Roth. At the start of their residency, they will show recent work at an opening reception this Sunday, July 31, from 4 to 6 pm. The show continues through Aug. 9.

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, the artists will talk on influences and inspirations at 7:30 pm. This talk is free. The artists will also teach a five-day master class in watercolor from Aug. 2 through 8. Participation in the class costs $995, but watching is free. Featherstone is located on Barnes Road, one quarter mile north of the four way stop, in Oak Bluffs. For more info, call 508-693-1850.
