Music: Children and chamber music, a good mix
July 28, 2005

When the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society planned this summer season it was decided to bring the classical music experience to a wider audience. What better way to do that then to give a concert in the Tabernacle? But the society went further by adding children as dancers in one of the pieces, making this a true family concert.

In the family spirit, chamber music society artistic director Delores Stevens will be playing the piano, her son Paul will be conducting the orchestra, and daughter Victoria has been working with the children and directing the production number.

The younger Ms. Stevens is on the faculty at the California Institute of the Arts in the School of Critical Studies, and she is also on the board of directors of the California Alliance for Art Education. She has used her experience as a professional cellist, actress, and dancer with her expertise in psychology to develop art education curricula and teacher training programs.

The children have been rehearsing for two weeks with the younger Ms. Stevens at the West Tisbury School. Rehearsals include creative exercises and of course lots of fun. Each young performer will bring to life a different animal in “Carnival of the Animals.” This weekend’s performance will be a thrilling conclusion to their work with Ms. Stevens.

Saturday’s concert will include J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #5, “I’ve Got Rhythm Variations for Two Pianos” by George Gershwin, and Camille Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals.” This will be a true family concert everyone will enjoy.

Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society, family concert, Saturday, July 30, 7 pm, at the Tabernacle, Campground, Oak Bluffs. Tickets $25. Call 508-693-0525 for more information.
