Today (Sunday) is my husband’s 60th birthday. He doesn’t seem a moment’s different to me until I look at an old photograph and am surprised by the darker hair and unlined face. We have grown older together, a day at a time. The sixties, which seemed so old when we were kids, is now just us and we still feel like ourselves, still just kids. We spent the day in our side-by-side workspaces, me painting, Mike making frames for me. A regular Sunday afternoon. Together, as I hope we will always be.

Bill Haynes stopped by at drink time. He was on his own for the day, as Betty was off-Island attending a bridal shower for their soon-to-be daughter-in-law, Jennifer Burke. Bruce was included in the party too, as were his children, Nathaniel and Jessica, and his sister, Janice, who will be a bridesmaid at the wedding. The shower was held in Avon, Massachusetts, given by an aunt of Jennifer’s. As she comes from a large family, it was quite a party with lots of friends, relatives (she has 40 cousins,) kids, and presents.

Bill had enjoyed the day out on his boat, fishing with his older grandsons. He said the harbor was filled and it was cooler than on land. Our porch always catches a breeze, however, so we were all comfortable by then. He went home to make supper for Betty. Mike and I headed off to the Square Rigger for a birthday dinner.

We had celebrated with the family Saturday night, dinner on Bobby and Richard’s porch. Bobby was quite sentimental about her eldest son turning 60, reminiscing about the heat of the original birthday (in pre-air-conditioning days, and with war-related rationing.) It was a lovely evening, finally cooling off, the breeze and sunset over their meadow. Jared, BZ, and Charlotte were there, Jim and Cecily, Hannah and Brian. His parents gave Mike an antique call-box for his fire-related memorabilia collection. I have been looking for an old West Tisbury Fire Department shield that would have gone on a leather helmet; if anyone has one to sell please let me know.

Sarah Murphy and Greg Barron have arrived from London to stay at Sarah’s parents’ house on Music Street. They and their children, Teddy, Billy, Stephanie, and Katherine will be here for a few weeks. Steve Sr. will be with them. Ted and Ann Murphy and their children, Teddy and Julia, will be arriving August 2, following a visit with Ann’s family in Vermont. Steve Jr. and family, and David Murphy, will be here later in the month.

Lila and Sydney Jasny, and parents Michelle and Max, have a new puppy named Flower. She is really cute, a cross between a Lab and a Golden Retriever. She looks like a perfect little black Lab puppy. She is very mellow, still sleeping a lot, though Michelle isn’t; she is the one who has to get up during the night with the puppy. I wish them all a long and happy life together.

Everybody seems to have their heads stuck in their Harry Potter books (me included) so I don’t have a lot of news this week. It’s been too hot to do much else besides read a good book on the porch. The upcoming week is supposed to be even hotter, with no rain or break in sight. Even with work, the summer days seem languorous.
