Tisbury September 8, 2005 By Kay Mayhew - 508-693-2725 - kayanddonald@yahoo.com Welcome home to Sally Coker. She has been relaxing away from the Island for six weeks. She went to visit her daughter Jody Coker who lives with her husband and children in Larkspur, Calif. Jody and her family were leaving for a trip to Australia. Sally was kept busy house-sitting and dog-sitting and cat-sitting while the family was away. Sally's sister Sandy Blauvelt lives nearby so they also enjoyed a number of visits back and forth. The Martha's Vineyard Garden Club passed out several awards last week to honor the businesses where pretty flower boxes had brightened up Main Street. The lack of rain this summer meant that the business people had to work a little harder to keep up the colorful flowers that made our town a lovely place to visit. The club recognized that these efforts did make a big difference to our appearance. The Artisans Fair in West Tisbury last weekend had something for everyone. There were watercolors and oil paintings and lots of books with Island artists and authors sharing their time. Strolling shoppers had their choice of beautiful and unusual items ranging from Ann Maley's picture postcards in quilted fabric to original clothing designs by Betsy Edge or sculptured birds by Ben Cabot. Whether tiny earrings or large pieces of furniture, everything was created by the talented Island artisans displaying the work. The talent even overflowed the new Ag Hall onto the surrounding grounds. Kathy Stinson reports that the Summer Reading Program at the Vineyard Haven Library was a huge success. The programs were well attended. I was amazed that the children and families who participated in keeping a log of books read, read more than 2,412 books in just July and August. Who says people don't read any more? Story times will continue on Tuesdays through the rest of the year. You can still register for the 5K Run/Walk to benefit the library. Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome. The fee is $15, with free T-shirts to the first 100 registrants. The entry forms are at the library. Sunday's race starts at 9 am and goes from the library to the West Chop Lighthouse and back. For additional information, call Larry Gomez at 508-693-6150. This week Bill Mayhew has brought his wife Peggy and his cousin Jim Bailey and his wife Linda to the Island. They have come from Illinois to do some research on the Mayhew ancestors as well as to enjoy our beautiful Island. They are staying for a few days at High Haven House. Happy anniversary to Chuck and Anne Downing. They mark six years together on Sunday. Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Susan Rice on Sunday. Joyce Stiles Tucker celebrates her special day on Wednesday. Heard on Main Street: "My mind is made up. Please don't confuse me with the facts."
