Our joy at the procession of clear, crisp sunny September days is tempered by memories of the terrorist attacks on September 11 four years ago, to which we can now add Hurricane Katrina's terrible assault on Gulf Coast cities.
It's time to start making and freezing spaghetti sauce from all the tomatoes we have harvested and to check our supplies for making jelly from the oncoming grapes. Our blueberry bushes barely produced a scant two pints this year. Maybe they needed rain.
Jean Fischer died Saturday morning after a long illness. There will be an exhibition of her watercolors, along with photographs by her son, Andrew, in December at the library. Jeannie was happy to hear about the show. We all loved Jeannie, and it's hard to imagine we won't see her here and there, out and about.
Thanks, as always, to Lillian Kellman, our favorite storyteller, for the stories she told children at the library all summer. Storytelling by Lillian has become an institution.
Thanks, too, to all the local merchants who supported the summer reading program at the library. The young people kept a log and received coupons for what they read: a chocolate lollipop from Chilmark Chocolates; slice of pizza from the Chilmark Store; a candy stick from the Menemsha Market; a popsicle from Menemsha Texaco; a small ice cream cone from The Galley, and small fries from The Bite.
Michelle Jasny, VMD will discuss the ethical, emotional, and financial dilemmas posed by the increasingly sophisticated diagnostic and aggressive medical intervention for pets next Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at the library. The Wednesday programs are sponsored by The Friends of the Library.
Weekend visitors at Kristin and John Maloney's were Lisa Carter and her husband Kim Halliday and their daughter Georgia from Newton. Lisa and Kristin have been friends since babyhood.
The fourth and fifth graders left Sunday night for their week on the Shenandoah, a great way to start the school year.
