Music from the heart for hurricane victims

September 15, 2005

Pianist Frank Wilkins, a regular on the Boston jazz scene, added his talents to the worthy event.

Vineyard favorite Michelle Holland sang from the heart for the victims of Katrina, and got audience members to join in too.

Concert organizer Rodney Ward took a brief turn at the microphone.

Nina Violet, a young Island artist whose musical career is blossoming, was among the featured performers.

An afternoon of music — from folk to jazz to blues — at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs last Saturday raised funds to help those hurt by Hurricane Katrina. A variety of well-loved musicians including Michelle Holland, Frank Wilkins, Nina Violet, Willie Mason, and Rico Holley took the stage during the four-hour event.

Rodney Ward, who has been producing jazz events at the Exchange in Oak Bluffs featuring top-notch off-Island talent, organized the benefit. Donation baskets were spread around the Tabernacle to collect contributions, as audience members relaxed in the cool Tabernacle or sat on the sunny lawn. Mr. Ward said he would add the contributions to proceeds from that evening's performances at the Exchange and estimated a total of at least $1,500 for hurricane relief.
