It appears that my early morning swims are just about over as the news is bringing dire predictions of a tropical storm reaching us just about the same time that you will be reading this column. But who knows? As that famous saying goes, "If you don't like the New England weather, just wait a minute and it will change".

Kyle Crossland, a son of Bernie and Mark Crossland, is having quite the adventure this year. Kyle is a senior at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and is majoring in landscape architecture. No surprise as his father's landscape accomplishments are well known here on the Island (think Ocean Park). For this semester, Kyle is in Madras, India attending the Institute of Sustainable Living. Here Kyle is learning about all kinds of renewable energy, including solar power, etc. Kyle will be returning to this country on Dec. 3 and in the meantime keeps his parents informed of his activities through e-mail.

Skylar Christopher Hall celebrated his fourth birthday on Sept. 6. I think he skipped a few years because last I remember he was an adorable two-year old but he is still adorable and also two years older. He celebrated with a birthday dinner at his Nana Ginnie Hall's home with his parents Helene and Fred Hall along with his sisters Jillian and Danielle. Of course the dinner included birthday cake which everyone enjoyed.

We send birthday smiles to Cory and Amber Medeiras on Sept. 20.The twins are the children of Pam and David Medeiras and grandchildren of Mary Ann Alwardt and Orlie Alwardt.

The Oak Bluffs School again this year wishes to increase parental involvement. There are several ways that you can do this. School Bank Day volunteers are needed. If you would like to help out with this project, please call Suzi Wallo at 508-693-2209 or Patti Leighton at 508-693-0161, ext. 128. Teachers would also like to encourage parents to become classroom representatives in their child's classroom, and of course the PTO hopes that parents will participate as members of this great group. The first PTO meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7 pm in the school library.

One of the special things about being a family in the Oak Bluffs School is the great support that everyone gives each other. Now the Vanderlaske Family needs that support from all of us. Recently Hannah Vanderlaske has fallen ill and is in Children's Hospital in Boston. Hannah's two sisters, Emma and Olivia are students at the school. Hannah's mom, Amy, is traveling to Boston quite frequently so the school has set up a donation box in the office and asking for donations for theses travel expenses. Checks should be made payable to the Oak Bluffs School PTO. Hannah is expected to be in Boston for at least another five to seven weeks. Please add the family to your thoughts and prayers as they need all the support we can give them right now.

The support for victims of hurricane Katrina is seen everywhere on this Island and runs the gamut from lemonade stands to fundraising concerts. Good Shepherd Parish raised more than $8,000 at special collections at their churches in just one weekend.

Please send any news items to me by Saturday this week as I am leaving on Sunday for four days in Phoenix to attend the Life Teen Music Conference there.

Enjoy your week.
