Our sympathy to the family of Greta Ghee, who died unexpectedly
three days before Christmas. Greta was always enthusiastically involved
in the community. She was a board member of The Yard, a library
volunteer, and an active participant for many years in the church
flea market, where she sold antique silver. I remember her helping
to set up the librarys book sale 20 years ago when it was
held in the library. Her family and friends will miss her cheerful
presence.
Everyone has been immersed in family holiday gatherings for the
last couple of weeks. Christmas this year was subdued with so many
families, both on-Island and across the country, missing family
members who are fighting in Iraq.
Liza Coogans Calendar cover in last weeks Times perfectly
expressed the feelings of many of us with its depiction of joy balanced
against the sorrow caused by the carnage thousands of miles away.
Snow, of course a foot of it was the topic of the
day on Monday. Many townsfolk were happy to find themselves snowbound
and able to enjoy a day off after the tumultuous rush of the previous
week. The snow was beautiful at 2 am, but by daylight, for some,
the awe was muted by the rigors of shoveling out and chain-sawing
tree branches, which had crashed during the night, often blocking
driveways. For the sake of the trees, a quick thaw was hoped for.
Heres to a productive and peaceful new year.
