Monday morning we woke to absolute silence as the snow muffled all
the usual traffic noise. Even the wind was still for a while, and
the birds must have been in hiding, recuperating from this sudden
onset of winter. I soon realized that the silence extended into
the interior of the house as I hadnt heard the phone ring
for at least 15 hours. Sure enough, when I checked there was no
dial tone on the house phone or fire phone, which also meant that
there would be no e-mailing my column to the Times by the Monday
noon deadline. After explaining my dilemma to the paper, they were
kind enough to extend the deadline, and Verizon fixed the line an
hour before the extended deadline. Thank you all.
Joyce Wadsworth planned to arrive from her home in Paso Robles,
Calif., on Monday, but due to the storm, Logan Airport was closed
to landings, so she will arrive on Tuesday. She will be spending
some time visiting her daughter Lynn Rebello and her family and
her sisters, Ann Hearn and Megan Alley.
Dion and Debra Alley and sons Sam and Ben were planning to arrive
Monday evening also to visit with Dions parents Dennis
and Megan Alley, but their arrival plans were also delayed.
Jack Law was in Boston last Tuesday expecting to undergo only routine
cardiac testing at Beth Israel Hospital, but when a blockage was
discovered in two arteries, he was immediately operated on to have
two stents inserted. His wife Pat reports he was released after
24 hours and is back home recuperating and very grateful that the
problem was discovered before it became more serious.
Several of our young college friends were here for the Christmas
break from their schools. Lizzy Wallo and Leanne Giordano, both
college seniors, were home with their families.
The merging of all the Catholic churches on the Island into just
one Church for the winter seems to be working very well, and the
4 pm Christmas Eve services at Our Lady Star of The Sea was so crowded
that numerous parishioners were turned away to attend another mass
later in the day or on Christmas Day.
The library would like you to know that they will be closed on Saturday,
Jan 1.
Enjoy all your holiday visitors. These past few weeks have been
very busy with families and friends involved with each other. I
still have not opened the cover to the book I brought especially
to start reading Christmas afternoon when I would have more
time. At least our lives are not boring!
Please send you news my way. Check on those who are alone during
this stormy weather, as they might need assistance. Enjoy your week.
