  • Eric Turkington: Looking back, moving on
    On Nov. 3, 1988, five days before Eric Turkington was elected to the first of 10 terms in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, The Times wrote in an editorial: “Eric Turkington has been interested in our problems and knowledgeable about possible solutions… We think he will be a strong voice, while remaining receptive to the opinions and ideas of his constituents.”
  • Music : Death Vessel on a high note
    In 2005, at Aboveground Records, Joel Thibodeau, who plays under the cryptic moniker Death Vessel, stepped up to the mic and captured everyone’s attention.
  • Theatre : "On Island:" A new play that’s close to home
    This past Wednesday’s performance of the play “On Island” had the feel of a sprawling family gathering.

    There are dreamers and there are doers. Elizabeth Straton, a tall, vibrant musician who Islanders might remember from her concerts in the 90s at Wintertide, Katharine Cornell Theatre, and Featherstone for the Arts is in the latter category, and she is back on the Island in West Tisbury after travels and adventures that have made her a citizen of the world.

    An unlikely singing sensation emerged last Thursday night, as Dr. Gerry Yukevich walked away with the grand prize at Outerland’s contest promoting the new Vineyard Playhouse show, "Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing."

    It was smooth sailing on Tuesday evening when close to 40 members of the Martha’s Vineyard Big Brothers, Big Sisters, a youth mentoring program, were invited aboard the historic schooner, Alabama.

    The formula is simple: Combine a strong and believable story with interesting characters, a worthy message, authentic details, and the sort of succinct descriptions that inspire mental images in young readers. The result, in the case of Edgartown author Polly Burroughs, is “The Honey Boat,” the sort of book that deserves to be read and reread.
  • Wall to wall: Tisbury Mural Project
    Granted, the theme “Historic Gateway to the Island” is broad. Still, the six entries for the mural to go on the exterior wall of the Tisbury Stop & Shop facing the Tisbury parking lot offer startling variety: Clam diggers, sailboats in Vineyard Haven Harbor, a mermaid riding a whale, a colorful beach scene, the historic Union Wharf, a visual timeline with pilgrims on one end and a present-day steamship on the other.

    When Nelia Hubbard came to the Vineyard in 1978 to work at the Book Den East for Susan and Richard Phelps, the couple lured Chris Decker, her boyfriend since high school days in La Cañada, California, to the Island also.

    The overcast sky and light intermittent drizzle did not dampen the spirits of the folks who strolled along Circuit Avenue on Saturday during the 31st Annual Tivoli Day Fair.

    The other day my husband and I were on the beach, enjoying a quick dip at the end of a busy Sunday, and we got into a rather intense conversation about subject verb agreement when the word “neither” is used.

    The shared history of humans and dogs goes back thousands of years, possibly begun when a wolf noticed that waiting patiently at the outskirts of a human’s fire occasionally resulted in a bite to eat, or maybe when some ancient human scooped up a fluffy motherless wolf pup.

    For the birder, without fail, September passes all too quickly. A sensational month for birds, it overwhelms one’s senses with bird migration reaching levels not encountered at any other time of year.
