All-stars
to Bourne
Both the boys and girls youth basketball all-star teams are entered
in the Bourne tournament this Saturday and Sunday
Vanessa Pisano,
who set records at MVRHS, is now a senior at Wheaton College in Norton.
She led her lacrosse team to a recent 24-4 crunching of Smith with
eight goals and two assists. She leads the New England Womens
and Mens Athletic Conference in goals (28), goals per game (7.0)
and points per game (7.35). She is second in points (31) draw controls
(19), and draw controls per game (4.75).
In
a prelude to the Vineyard fishing season, Frank LoRusso of
Chilmark wet a line in Florida last week. Frank holds up a
large permit he caught on light spinning tackle while fishing
out of Summerland Key with charter captain Pete Peterson.

Mite
hockey tourney
The MV Youth Hockey Mite teams will play host to squads from Malden
and Lower Cape at the MV Arena in a spring tournament beginning Friday
at 5:30 when the MV Blacks play Malden. At 6:30 its MV Whites
vs. Lower Cape,
Play resumes Saturday with games at 9:30 and 10:30, and again at 6:15
and 7:15 pm. A consolation game will begin Sunday morning at 9:30.
The championship game faces off at 10:40 am
The national game
Saturdays varsity baseball scrimmage at Nauset was cancelled
due to wet grounds. Instead the Islanders had an in-house scrimmage
here.
Good pitching beats good hitting. True enough!
Besides, this was the batters first look at live pitching, so the
players had predictable trouble at the plate.
The Vineyards strong suit is pitching anyway, so it was no surprise
to Coach Doug Hoehn that the hurlers had the upper hand Saturday.
Matt Kurth pitched two innings, Jacques Penicaud went three. Also
on the mound were Billy Panek for three innings and Mike Cecilio for
two. Catcher Jordan Hoehn shed his tools of ignorance
for a turn on the rubber. Ryan Rossi has been sidelined by an injured
shoulder, so he did not throw.
The Tuesday scrimmage at Mashpee was also a victim of the weather.
Two more pre-season scrimmages are scheduled. Today the Islanders
are to be at Plymouth North. Sunday they are home to Westford Academy.
Opening day is Tuesday, April 5 at Sandwich.
First and fast
Heres a date to remember! Wednesday, April 17.
On that day the MVRHS varsity and junior varsity softball teams and
the JV baseball team will board the New England Fast Ferry bound for
Nantucket at 1 pm for games at 3:00 pm.
The fast ferry will return to the Vineyard carrying the Whalers varsity
baseball team and varsity girls lacrosse team for games here at 4:15.
The ferry leaves Vineyard Haven at 3:45 with the MVRHS boys varsity
lacrosse team for a 6:00 pm game and returns to MV with the victorious
softball and JV baseball teams at 5:15. The Nantucket baseball and
girls lacrosse teams set sail for home at 7:00 pm and the MV boys
lacrosse players embark for home from Nantucket at 8:30 pm.
The fast ferry can carry up to 149 passengers, so parents and fans
may accompany the teams. A round-trip ticket costs $20.
Not only is this new service a timesaving convenience, it costs the
high school some $4,000 less than airfare, the only alternative.

13-2. The second contest, a defensive tug-of-war, ended 1-0, Scottish
