Better
be safe
Ron Walsh, director of Boat Safe Marthas Vineyard, announces
the renewal of accreditation for his Boating Safety Basics Course.
by the National Assn. of States Boating Law Administrators.
An Edgartown resident, Mr. Walsh has been teaching boating classes
for more than 10 years as a certified instructor with the Coast Guard
Auxiliary. The 10-hour safety course will be held on Sundays, starting
June 12.
Massachusetts requires youths 12-15 years old to get a Safety Certificate
in order to operate a powerboat without an adult aboard. The same
certificate is also required for 16- and 17-year-olds to operate personal
watercraft (jet skis).
Mr. Walsh is also a certified vessel examiner.

Netmen
All of the MV singles players, Pat and Jamie Smadbeck and Nick Wallen,
won their matches in straight sets here, Monday with Chatham, and
Jeremy Meachem and Tim McHugh did as well at first doubles, 6-3, 7-5.
At second doubles, freshmen Seth Seeman and Daniel Han played well,
but bowed to two Chatham seniors, 4-6, 3-6.
Tuesday The Rough Riders proved to be a smooth canter for Fennessys
force, which swept Harwich in straight sets without much of a sweat.
The team (4-3) is at always-tough Duxbury tomorrow.
Netmaidens
The MVRHS varsity girls tennis team scratched out its third win of
the season at Chatham, Monday. At first and second singles, Islanders
Morgan Anderson and Caetlyn Hutchinson lost in straight sets by the
same margin, 6-3, 6-1.
Katherine Clark remained unbeaten this year, besting Kailey Dolan
at third singles and both MV doubles teams won. Lauren Franklin and
Laura Kimball had to work for the first set, 7-5, but dominated the
second, 6-1. Antonia Hickey and Christine Bagnall had no problem at
all, 6-0, 6-0.
At Harwich, Tuesday, the MV girls flexed their muscles and won every
match.
After three narrow (3-2) losses to begin the season, the girls have
won four in a row gaining confidence and momentum. They can use all
of it Friday versus Barnstable.
Anchors aweigh
Saturday, at B.C. High, the MVRHS sailing team was one of the three
(of 10) teams to qualify for Sundays ODay regatta at Tabor
Academy.
In heavy wind at Tabor, the Islanders finished in the top five in
eight early races. But with wind conditions changing, the young Vineyarders
had to settle for 10th place behind St. Georges, Tabor, Milton,
Portsmouth Abbey, Brunswick, Hotchkiss, BC High, North Kingston and
Duxbury in that order. Trailing M.V. were Marblehead, Belmont Hill,
Greenwich, Williams, and Hingham.
Saturday, Bp. Stang will challenge the Vineyard at the Sailing Camp
Park in the Lagoon at noon.
MV will host the New England Team Racing championships during which
eight teams will race for three berths in the Nationals, May 21-22.
Were in!
MVRHS has become an associate member of the South Coast Conference
which includes Apponequet, Bourne, Case, Dighton-Rehobeth, Fairhaven,
Greater New Bedford Voke, Old Rochester, Seekonk, and Wareham, perhaps
ending a long search for a home since the demise of the
old Cape & Islands League. Perhaps because the Vineyards
membership is that of an associate and will be reviewed
in 2007.
The Expenditure of time and money involved in sending teams to the
Vineyard has been the sticking point. The new fast-ferry service and
an MV offer to pay for some of the ferry fare of visiting teams has
obviously helped to sweeten the pot.
Eight Island teams that are now in no league will play conference-heavy
schedules beginning with winter sports. Boys and girls soccer teams,
basketball teams and the baseball and softball teams will play 18
conference games home and home with the other nine schools
in the conference. The field hockey team will play 16 conference games.
The boys hockey team will play Bourne, Greater New Bedford, Old Rochester,
Fairhaven and Wareham, home and home.
Teams already in a conference or league will stay there for the foreseeable
future, according to Athletic Director Glen Field. Only the boys and
girls tennis teams and the golf team remain independents.
The football, track, and cross-country teams will stay in the Mayflower
League. The boys and girls lacrosse teams remain in the Maritime League,
The Girls hockey team is still in the South Cape League and the Sailing
team has its own affiliation in a Cape & Islands league.
Potpourri
The 11th annual Childrens Benefit Golf Tournament will be held
Sunday, June 5, at Farm Neck to benefit the B&G Club and Big Brothers/Big
Sisters. Five-player teams will tee off beginning 8 am. Sponsors,
5-player teams and interested persons are wanted. Call Greg Rollins
at 627-3303
The JV girls field hockey team enjoyed a hat
trick by Celeste Glavin and two goals by Tiffany Smalley but lost
to Dartmouth last Wednesday, 9-5. Grace Murphy led the attack here
Friday against Greater New Bedford Voke with another hat trick and
two assists, but the Whale City visitors won, 9-6
..Karen Kukolich
of Edgartown set a new womens worlds record (her third)
by landing a 22-pound Pacific jack cravalle on a 16-pound tippet in
Crocodile Bay, Costa Rica
..For the third time this spring, Vanessa
Pisano was named NEWMAC player-of-the-week. She led Wheaton to its
third consecutive lacrosse league championship with 12 goals and 2
assists against Babson, Amherst, and MIT
.The MV R&G Clubs
31st annual trout tournament for kids will be Saturday, May 7, at
Duartes Pond. The pond will have been stocked by volunteers
with more than 2,000 trout. Hot dogs, donuts, and sodas will be served.
DeLisle is debest
Bob DeLisle regained the Rod & Gun trap championship, a title
he wore from 2000 to 2003, by breaking 46 of 50 targets, Sunday. Tim
OBryan was second and tops in class A with 44. Buss OBrien
was third and best in class B with 41. Class C champ John Cahill broke
37 targets.
Bob DeLisle became a Grand Slam Award winner, joining Harold Green
and Jim Malm, the third to have won the trap, skeet and Klays for
Kids shoot-outs.
Grillo cleans up
Tony Grillo of Vineyard Haven, the 15-year-old freshman leader of
the MVRHS golf team, won his first national title last weekend at
the FCWT (Future Collegiate World Tour) at Stow Acres by carding 115
for 27 holes in the rain, two better than Dong Kim of Bradenton, Florida,
who was second. Sundays heavy downpour shortened the planned
18 holes to nine.
Tony had three birdies. I was just glad to shoot pars in the
rain, he told The Times.
Whats next? The win qualifies Tony to compete for the national
PGA junior championship at Palm Beach, Florida, Memorial Day weekend.
A softball win
The MVRHS softball team evened the season count at 4-4 with an 8-3
win at Harwich, Tuesday.
Both Kathryn DeBettencourt and Kelsey Perry scored three times. Pitcher
Brielle Leonard struck out seven and boosted her cause with two hits.
Kelly Silvia, the Vineyards outstanding catcher, mowed down
two would-be stealers at second base. It was just the Rough Riders
second loss of the year. |
