Thirty-eight tennis players in three divisions competed in the first Early Bird Doubles Tournament at the Island Country Club last weekend.

The men’s and women’s rough divisions were open to players of all abilities. The women’s smooth division was for B and C level players.

Paul Adler and Sandy Nadelstein emerged as champions of the men’s rough division, having beaten Ray Lincoln and Bill Ericksen, 6-0, 6-1, and Adam Bresnick and Doug Cooper, 6-3, 6-2. In the final match Adler and Nadelstein topped Rick Meyers and George Fay, 6-3, 6-1.

The Myers-Fay duo reached the finals after a highly contested match with Arthur Stafford and Tony Omer requiring a tie break, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).

Winners of the consolation round robin was the father-son team of Henry and Zach Nieder.

Susan Kimball and Liz Roberts slipped by Sally Lasker and Laura Schroeder in the finals of the women’s rough division, 6-1, 6-2, after struggling to get by Barbara Garfinkle and Laurie Eible, 6-1, 7-5.

Kimball/Roberts had previously beaten Susie Safford and Sally Anderson, 6-1, 6-0. Garfinkle/Eible had squeezed by Mary Kelly and Cindi Chamberland, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7)

Lasker/Schroeder reached the finals after a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ellen Bresnick and Carla Rolde in the semi-final and earlier success versus the mother/daughter pair Cindy and Erin Trish.

The most contested match was in the opening round when Bresnick/Rolde outlasted Connie McHugh and Karin Houghton, 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).

The McHugh/Houghton team earned consolation esteem, defeating Safford/Anderson, 6-0, 6-1.

The four pairs entered in the Women’s Smooth Division played a round robin won by Mabelle Thompson and Jeannie Borggaard who were undefeated. Terri Pothier and Pam Reilly were second. Olive Tomlinson and Paula Martin beat Inelda Cable and Ellen Synan for consolation honors.

Women's softball

Winning their first three games, the Creamers were the only team in the Women’s Softball League that had not tasted defeat — until Tuesday, when they played the Honeys. Supported by a leak-proof defense, especially from shortstop Beth Sawyer and first baseman Kelly Silvia, Honey’s pitcher Susie Schofield had a shutout until the final inning when she let in one Creamer run. Meanwhile, her teammates were scoring three times in the 2nd, twice in the 3rd, and once in both the 5th and 6th.

Also Tuesday, at Veterans Field, Tisbury, the Snaps and Shady Ladies were locked in a scoreless game until the 6th inning when both teams scored six runs. In the seventh the Snaps scored the winner with a base on balls.

The winless Vixens trailed the Hazards 10-1 until the final inning when they scored eight times, falling just short of sending the game into extra innings.
