Track & Field awards night was Wednesday, June 22. At the T&F oval, Coach Joe Schroeder announced that awards for the most outstanding athletes in track events were Lucas Brewer and Alison Flanders. The most outstanding in field events were Tim Luce and Alice Hopkins.

The most improved boys were Jim Bishop and Mason Fisher. The most improved girl was Amanda McIsaac.

The sportsmanship awards went to Mitch Robinson and Gwen Mayhew.

Boys lacrosse

A dozen alumni turned out for the alumni vs. the varsity/junior varsity lacrosse game, Saturday. “Old timers” included Curtis Chandler, Grant Joiner, Ben Brisson, Alex Rossi, Michael Parker, and John Evans. Coaches Peter Ferrini and Chris Greene played with the alums.

The alumni won, 15-10.

At the team banquet on Sunday in the school cafeteria, Maritime League all-stars Andrew Farrissey, Michael Giordano, Edison Parzanese, and Tim Scott were recognized, as were Spike Currier and Alex Avakian who were named to the all-star second team.

Mark Levesque was named the player most improved. With 141 points, 93 of which were assists, Edison Parzanese was chosen team MVP. The team’s high scorer was Michael Giordano with 63 goals.

The Munson award, given to the most team-oriented player, was shared by Alex Avakian and Spike Currier.

It was announced that Edison Parzanese and Alex Avakian will be co-captains of the ‘06 team.

No hits, no runs, 5 errors!

Cutlines in last week’s account of the Babe Ruth softball finals misidentified A’s players in close plays at the plate. It was Emily Alosso blocking Jessica Willoughby and Julie Perry beating the throw to Erin Morris.

In the ice skating highlight we failed to put an “s” on Diana Woods name, we put an unwanted space in BreAnne Russell’s name, and we left out the “i” in Hailey Meader’s name.

We are grateful to our readers for setting the record straight.

Hale is top Frost Biter

The Frost Biters and Winter Guys, off-season sailors, completed their spring season of harbor racing last Thursday. At season’s end, first place was jointly occupied by Phil Hale in Alerion and Dan Culkin in Magic Time. The tie-breaker consideration was the number of first place finishes which gave the nod to Phil with Dan as runner-up.

In third through eighth places were (3) Mike Oliviera, (4) Jerry Goodale, (5) Peter Rodegast, (6) Margo Becker, (7) John Amabile, (8) Bob Jewett.

The Frost Biters, all members of the Holmes Hole Sailing Assn., suspend their off-season racing until the Moffett race signals the end of the HHSA season.

’Canes take a thrashing

The Makos dropped the Hurricanes from the ranks of the undefeated, Monday, with a combination of sharp fielding and a blistering offense. The Sharks batted around in the first inning posting seven runs. In the third, Chris Menne belted a three-run homer over everything in center field. In the top of the seventh, Carlin Hart drove in three with monstrous round-tripper into right.

The Makos scored in every inning but the fourth. They looked so strong and balanced that one wondered how they could have three games in the loss column.

Also Monday, the Wildcats got by the improving Boilers, 12-9.

Last Wednesday the Treds and Sandogs (nee Batdogs) were victorious over the Riptide and Boilers. On Thursday the Wildcats, Brewhas and Hurricanes outscored the Riptide, Makos and Treds.

Standings as of June 28

Brewhas 5/0
Hurricanes 5/1
Sandogs 3/2
Makos 3/3
Wildcats 3/3
Treds 2/3
Boilers 1/5
Riptide 0/5

Cards claim crown

The Cardinals emerged from the three-team Babe Ruth playoffs as undisputed champions of the Vineyard.

In a game to determine which team should get a bye, the Cards edged the Twins, 5-4.

In the semi-final game, the Blue Jays beat the Twins, 2-0, behind the shutout hurling of D.J. Kaeka and Chris Gross, winning the right to face the Cardinals in the championship round, Saturday.

The Blue Jays scored first on a Nick Cuba single and looked to add more, but a circus catch by Taza Vercruysse ended the threat.

The Cards led 7-4 after two innings, but a Jays rally, powered by Nick Fogt’s triple and hits by Andrew McElhinney and Billy Johnson, tied the score at 8-8 in the fifth.

With the bases loaded with Twins, Zach Countinho went to the mound for the Cards and shut out the Jays the rest of the way.

The tie-breaker and winning run was driven in by Ben Ferry, scoring Dick McAuliffe in the bottom of the fifth. John Nelson’s single added an insurance run. The Cards’ final margin over the Blue Jays was 12-8.

Astral aspirations

An all-star Martha’s Vineyard Little League team has entered the lists of the national double elimination tournament with the ultimate goal of an appearance in the Little League World Series.

Of course, no one thinks that the Vineyarders will go all the way to Williamsport, Pa., but Browning was right about one thing: “a man’s reach should exceed his grasp or what’s a heaven for?” That goes double for youngsters.

The roster of talented and hopeful all-stars is: Delmont Araujo, Max Berlow, Ben Ciciora, Jock Cooperrider, Kevin Galligan, Colby Gouldrup, Peter Keaney, Chris Morris, Nick Nelson, Taylor Smith, William Stewart, Noah Stobie, and Andrew Williamson.

Bruce Stewart is the manager with coaches Sam Berlow and Stephen Morris.

MV opens with a win

The Vineyarders won their first game at Mashpee, Tuesday, 3-2.

Pitcher William Stewart went the distance (six innings) striking out nine, walking one and allowing two runs in the top of the sixth.

The Islanders did their scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Peter Keaney led off with a line single to center. Ben Ciciora followed with another rope to center. William Stewart walked, loading the bases. Colby Gouldrup hit into a fielder’s choice, with Keaney thrown out at the plate. With Nick Nelson at bat and faking a bunt, Mashpee’s hurler Josh Campbell uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Ciciora and moving Stewart to third. After Nelson struck out, Kevin Galligan walked, reloading the bases. Another wild pitch scored Stewart and sent Gouldrup to third, Galligan to second. Noah Stobie drew a base on balls, filling the bases again and yet another wild pitch allowed Gouldrup to cross the plate. Jock Cooperrider grounded out to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, two Mashpee batters reached on singles and the next batter drove the ball down the right field line just out of the reach of Colby Gouldrup; it went for a two-RBI triple. The next batter also flied to right, but Gouldrup caught it and threw quickly to the plate holding the runner at third. Stewart fanned the next batter, ending the game.

The MV batting order was Williamson (5), Morris (4), Smith (6), Keaney (3), Ciciora (2), Stewart (1), Goldrup (9), Berlow (7), and Galligan (8).

Stobie came off the bench to replace Williamson at third, Cooperrider came in for Morris at second, and Nelson replaced Berlow in left.

Field of Dreams

Ground was broken at the MV Regional High School at the site of a proposed new baseball field on the south side of Sanderson lane where the high school property abuts the State Forest.

A second baseball field will allow varsity and junior varsity games to be played at the same time. At present, most schools do not send their j.v. teams to the Island so the Vineyard jayvees must play most of their games off-Island.

It is also hoped that a first-rate, full-sized baseball field on the Vineyard will attract teams of the Cape Cod League.

Of the estimated $265,000 cost to build the field, some $200,000 has been pledged or received in kind or in cash.

The Board of Volunteers heading the effort is Doug Reece, broker/owner of RE/MAX on-Island and president of the Vineyard Babe Ruth program; Gary Simmons, junior varsity baseball coach and PE teacher at MVRHS; Matt Crowther, golf course superintendent at Mink Meadows; Phil Regan, architect and assistant baseball coach; Doug Hoehn, a surveyor and varsity baseball coach at MVRHS.
