Brewhas still unblemished

Midway through the Men’s Softball League season the Brewhas remain undefeated, but the Hurricanes gave them a scare. Trailing by nine in the last inning, Thursday, the ’Canes scored eight runs to fall just shy of forcing an extra inning, 16-15.

Also Thursday, the Boilers posted their second win of the season, edging the Riptide, 9-8, and the ’Dogs beat the ’Cats, 7-5.

Wednesday it was Brewhas 10, Treds 7, and Sandogs 21, Riptide 6.

Standings as of July 5
Brewhas 7-0
Hurricanes 5-2
Sandogs 5-2
Makos 3-3
Wildcats 3-4
Treds 2-4
Boilers 2-5
Riptide 0-7

Fibber finishes first

Chris “Fibber” Magee, 41, of Edgartown, drove his 2004 Dodge Intrepid to victory at the Thompson Speedway, last Thursday, winning the feature Pro Stock, 30-lap race.

Fibber won the pole position in the qualifying round, started in first place and was never headed. Some 25 cars began the race. Eighteen reached the finish line.

As the Dodge has only recently been admitted to Nascar racing, Fibber’s victory is something approaching an historic event and should go a way toward justifying the investment of his sponsors: Al’s Package Store, The Island Group, Island Water Systems, and Bay State Towing and Recovery.

Ahoy, catboat sailors

Saturday, July 16, is the annual Edgartown Catboat Rendezous with races in Cow Bay. Anchorage at Eel Pond is suggested with a reminder that entrance to the pond at low tide can be tricky. Arrival in the late afternoon of the 15th and morning departure on the 17th should be best.

The skippers’ meeting is at 83 Planting Field Way, 9 am Saturday. Two races with a break for lunch and a swim are planned. “All catboaters are welcome. No need to sign up. Just show up” say Jim O’Connor, Jeff Craig, and Stu Lollis.

Frisbee Golf tourney

The fourth annual Chris Burgess Memorial Disc Golf tournament tees off at 10 am, Saturday, July 16 at the MV Disc Golf Club in the state forest. The tourney had 60 players last year. Seamus Scanlon, club president, hopes for 72 from a number of states this year.

Registration begins at 8:30 at the course, 1.1 mile south of the “blinker” — the four-way stop at the junction of Vineyard Haven–Edgartown and Barnes roads.

Distaff softball

The Shady Ladies outlasted the Hazards at Tisbury’s Veterans Park, Tuesday. Chris Rasmussen was especially strong at the plate. The Hazards rallied for seven runs in the fifth but couldn’t quite catch the Ladies.

Also Tuesday the Honeys ran away from the Snaps, 14-2 and the Creamers creamed the Vixens, 11-1.

Standings as of July 6
Creamers 4-1
Honeys 4-1
Snaps 3-2
Hazards 2-3
Shady Ladies 2-3
Vixens 0-5

Babe Ruth baseball

A Vineyard all-star team, entered in the Babe Ruth Cape Cod double-elimination tournament, the first leg of the National Babe Ruth Championship Series, lost its first game to Falmouth, Saturday, at Freeman Field in Brewster, 8-1.

The Islanders started the scoring when Zach Coutinho singled, driving in Ryan Brennan in the first inning. But that was all the offense the Vineyard could muster as Falmouth’s big, port-sided hurler, Pat Brennan, kept the Islanders at bay.

Falmouth exploded for seven runs in the third on a combination of line-drive hits and Vineyard miscues.

Sunday, trailing Lower Cape, 4-0, the Vineyarders tied the score in the fifth. Hits by Lamar Moreis, Ryan Brennan, Zach Coutinho, Jon Nelson, and Scott Cleary, surrounding a walk to Albion Alley, did the trick. In the seventh, Joe Keaney drove in Lamar Moreis with the winning margin, then took the mound to earn the save.

But the Vineyarders reached the end of the trail, Tuesday, again at Freeman Field in Brewster. Mashpee crushed them, 11-1.

Vineyard Football Association

Early Tuesday, MV Lathe & Plaster edged the Atlantic Football Club on a well-placed header by Eric Herman in the first half. It was the game’s only goal.

In the late game of the double header, Broadway Screen Printing scored four times and kept Sports Haven off the board. Broadway enjoyed an early lead on two goals by Joelcio Alvares. In the second half, Leah Yandow scored on a penalty shot and Garry Metters contributed the fourth and final goal.
