Men's softball

Scoring in every inning but the last, the Treds avenged a previous loss to the Boilers with a 15-5 spanking in the Monday early game. The longest blow was a fourth-inning home run by Pete Lambos.

The Wildcats seem to have the Makos number. They beat them 19-13 on June 9, and overcame a 6-3 deficit in the final inning to beat them again on Monday, 9-6.

Also Monday the unbeaten Brewhas were mismatched with the winless Riptide in a mercifully shortened game.

Last Wednesday the Hurricanes blew by the Riptide and the Makos trod on the Treds.

In Thursday’s trifecta, the Brewhas had their way with the Sandogs, the Wildcats chewed on the Treds, and the Makos mauled the Boilers.

Menšs Softball Standings as of July 12

Brewhas 9-0
Hurricanes 6-2
Sandogs 5-3
Makos 5-4
Wildcats 5-4
Treds 3-6
Boilers 2-7
Riptide 0-9

Cover the middle: a tennis tip by Scott Smith

In doubles, one of your main concerns is to cover the middle of the court as this is the easiest shot for your opponent. When your opponents hit a wide shot to your partner, it is your responsibility to cover the middle. When the ball is hit wide to you, your partner should cover the middle. Also, during long rallies with one up and one back, it is the net person’s responsibility to move with the ball up and back, thus protecting the middle of the court, just in case your partner accidently hits it to the opposing net player.

Scott Smith is a certified USPTA Professional and is Director of Tennis at the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club. He is the Tennis Director for the City of Auburndale, Florida in the winter.
