Planning Your Wedding on Martha's Vineyard

Betsy Corsiglia Photography
"The wonderful thing about a wedding on the Vineyard is that it's a real event. People come from all over and tend to stay for days. They let their hair down, relax, and really get to know the Island. No one ever leaves saying, 'Oh, I went to a wedding like that just last year.'"

--Louise Sweet of Flowers on the Vineyard
Getting Your Marriage License

To marry on Martha's Vineyard you must have a marriage license issued in Massachusetts. Both parties must apply in person for a marriage license.

Visit any town clerk (see contact info below) to file for a marriage license. Once issued, a marriage license is valid for 60 days and can be used anywhere in the state.

Town Clerks
on Martha's Vineyard

Aquinnah: 508-645-2300
Chilmark: 508-645-2107
Edgartown: 508-627-6110
Oak Bluffs: 508-693-5515
Tisbury: 508-696-4215

After you file for a marriage license, there is a waiting period of three days before it can be picked up or mailed to you. A marriage license costs about $15.

Medical Certificates

As of January 28, 2005, medical certificates are not required to obtain a marriage license in Massachusetts.

Your Ceremony

The state of Massachusetts does not require witnesses at your ceremony. The officiate, whether a clergy member or a justice of the peace, must complete and sign the original license and return it to the clerk of the city or town where the license was issued.

For information about having an out-of-state member of the clergy or a lay person perform your marriage, or to learn about age requirements, obtaining waivers, recommendations for divorced applicants, click here.
