Have you noticed how clear the sides of State Road are up-Island? An Island company got the state contract to clear brush and trees that obstruct views and/or are dangerous, and the result is that at the end of many roads you can actually see oncoming traffic!
This is terrific in my opinion: I live on a road where if the brush is allowed to run wild you cannot see cars in the oncoming lane unless you pull out really far, so it's lovely to be able to see from a safe distance. This also gives me hope that some day there might be an up-Island bike path, which we desperately need. You can see that where the brush has been cleared on some parts of State Road there is indeed space for a bike path.
Aquinnah will be represented by high school senior Elsie Fantasia at the Minnesingers' Winter Shows at the Whaling Church in Edgartown on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10 and 11. The Minnesingers are directed by Aquinnah resident Janis Wightman.
The Aquinnah Holiday Potluck and Christmas Party will be on Thursday, Dec. 16, from 4 to 6:30 pm at the Old Town Hall. Santa will be there for the kids, but this party is for the adults too.
Last year was a lot of fun, so please bring a dish and come on out.
I met our new town administrator, Adam Wilson, the other day. He seems to be settling in quite nicely, and he would like to encourage people to stop by and introduce themselves. Interesting facts about Adam: he is the son of the late Eileen Wilson, the founder of the Vineyard Playhouse, and he also started Adam Cab. The special town meeting achieved a quorum. All nine of the warrant articles passed. Thank you to those who were able and willing to perform their civic duty. The tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year can now be set.
A birthday party was held for Nonie Smith last Friday, it was supposed to be a surprise, but that didn't quite work out. Anyway, there was a lot of good food and good cheer and it felt nice to be celebrating "someone" instead of Thanksgiving or Christmas. She got many great gifts (some of us were a little anxious about what to get her — she's got such good taste). Among the kids there was a fantastic dress-up game of princesses that included boys as well as girls and no one posted any pictures on Facebook, because really you know those pictures would just come back to haunt them around Prom time.
The first Family. Film. Feast. was held on Saturday at the Community Center, and it was a lot of fun. There were quite a few kids from Aquinnah there, Laina Benoit, Sasha Gerhard, and the twins Olive and Violet, to name a few. It was wonderful to see how attentive the kids were through all the films (a series of shorts), and none of them were from Disney — they were all unique. As the mother of a child who is obsessed with the movies "Toy Story" and "Cars," I really appreciated the quality and originality of the films and the fact that I don't have to be nagged to buy a toy relating to any of the films. The next Family. Film. Feast. Will be on January 8, 2011.
Yes, 2011. Really? Maybe I should start Christmas shopping.
