My son was sick all weekend and I missed Berta and Vern's Christmas party on Saturday and Mitzi Pratt's open house on Sunday. I'm sure that they were great and I would have liked to attended but felt that as a possible carrier of contagion I should stay home. So, I did and I watched "Toy Story" (1 and 3) again. We did manage to get the tree decorated on Sunday, and that always puts me in the Christmas spirit. Considering that Christmas is this week, it's about time.
Thank you Nonie Madison, Alex Taylor, Betty Joslow, Dan Sauer, and everyone else who helped out with the Aquinnah Christmas party. It was amazing: Santa pulled up on a fire truck, every child got a present and the chance to sit on Santa's lap. Then there was the great potluck dinner with cupcakes for dessert. You could also decorate a cookie or two and an ornament. Of course all the kids ran around like crazy, as they always do, but Santa really got their attention, especially riding in the fire truck — a great touch at a great party. There were a lot of kids there of course, but many other people came too.
There will be a service on Christmas Eve at the Gay Head Community Baptist Church. Caroling starts at 4:30 pm, the candlelight service is from 5 to 6 pm, and there will be a dessert and coffee social afterwards. Feel free to bring a dessert to share.
If you feel like travelling down-Island or you would prefer a later service, both the West Tisbury Congregational Church and the Edgartown Federated Church (at the meeting house on South Summer Street) are holding services at 10 pm. There will be candlelight, music, and presumably Christmas cheer at all of these events.
I saw Nina Butler and her dad, Len, getting their Christmas tree this weekend. Nina is home for Christmas break from her last year at Wesleyan; she will fly out to Colorado in January to visit her sister, Jeffie.
Nenawe Vanderhoop just returned from Holland, where she spent three weeks with her grandmother. The first two weeks her mother, Saskia, was with her and then the last week she was on her own.
I hope everyone has a happy, peaceful Christmas. And that everyone enjoys the day.
