Blitz karate team members score well

Twenty competitors from Blitz Fitness in West Tisbury were among more than 200 martial artists who participated in the Independent Practicing Promoters of New England (I.P.P.O.N.E) Karate Kickoff tournament in Fitchburg on Jan. 22.

The competitors ranged in age from five to 48. The Island team fared well.

Islanders Cord Bailey, Jacob Peters, Parker Blake, Jean Cleary, and Evelyn Brewer won first place in the fighting category. Grace Oslyn, Ben Nadelstein, Julia Bettencourt, and Hunter Cleary took second.

Top honors in Kata forms went to Cord Bailey, Jean Cleary, and Garrett Broadley. Grace Oslyn and Ben Nadelstein finished in second place.

In the weapons event, Julia Bettencourt placed first. Grace Oslyn and Jean Cleary were second.
